(CNN)Ashley Judd and her family wanted the world to hear from them how Naomi Judd died. The younger Judd appeared in an interview with Diane Sawyer, which aired on Thursday on "Good Morning America." She said her family had agreed that she share the cause of death of her mother. "She used a weapon," Ashley Judd said. "A firearm. So that's the piece of information we are very uncomfortable sharing."
She and her sister Wynonna Judd announced on April 30 that they had lost their mother "to the disease of mental illness." She was 76.
Ashley Judd said she and her family wanted to shed light on mental illness, explaining that it is "important to make the distinction between the loved one and the disease."
Judd said the family reluctantly shared the cause of death before it became public in some other way. She also revealed that she was the one who discovered her mother, who had been outspoken about her battle with depression, after it happened.

How sad. Well, nobody knows what goes through the mind of someone who decides to go this route. The only certainty, is that we can’t know what was in her mind. If she was suffering some mental illness, then there’s no way her thought process would make sense to any of us.
Friend had two sons commit suicide. Enough said
My thoughts as well…..
……..I won’t say what I really think of Ashley….
….but I agree with you.
Always sad..and hard on the rest of the family.
Poor troubled soul.
Physically healthy adults who commit suicide almost always fall within the same three categories...
(1) Schizophrenia or Clinical Depression
(2) Drug or alcohol addiction
(3) Family history of suicide
Odd she’d kill herself leaving “a mess” for others to have to deal with. Taking pills is bad enough but shooting herself? Very selfish imo.
True. Maybe it is a little surprising but shooting yourself is a bad way to commit suicide. First it typically leaves a terrible mess which might be why some guys do it. But you would not believe the number of people who end up just blowing off part of their face or head, paralyzing themselves, or causing very painful internal injuries that either take an extended period to die from or just leave people very messed up.
Over the years I went to several people who were trying to blow their heads off with a shotgun and ended up blowing off their faces. What a mess! If you have to use your toe to pull the trigger...just don't. It is stupid.
Women often take a bunch of pills and then call someone. In that case they are typically looking for attention, but many end up dying anyway. Sometimes the survivors end up with organ damage or brain damage. Just as stupid but in a different way.
Indeed - society chose to CELEBRATE mental illness. Put it on a pedestal. At least, the homosexual and transsexual forms.
And those’re no longer acknowledged as illness.
As for the other mental/emotional illnesses - it hasn’t been PC for decades to have real “institutions”. So people suffer more - both the ill, and the not ill.
“She was a beautiful woman”
Aging an be devastating for women who build and value their worth on their beauty.
She went out on her own terms, I really don’t care about the details. RIP
A lifelong friend of our family did it with a firearm after suffering with Parkinsons and couldn’t take it anymore.
No offense but some things are better left unsaid
Have you ever been depressed? It's real. Some people just want to get it over with.
It seems for me it reached deeper than the surface. And she was a beautiful woman but she probably didn’t see it in herself. People tell me the same but I don’t see it in myself
I can’t believe what she’s done with her face. Ashley used to be so beautiful on the outside but her exterior now matches her ugly persona.
Is that botched plastic surgery?
I always remember her protesting while wearing a T-shirt that said “This is what a feminist looks like”. Now she looks like every other stereotypical busted feminist ranting and raving in public.
Amen. You're absolutely right. She was no coward.
Speaking of messes... We responded to a call where someone tried to kill themself by sawing off their feet with a butchers knife. The young lady had made a serious attempt to kill herself previously by slamming her car into a tree. She was paralyzed from the waist down and had no sensation in her lower extremities.
She opened the door when we rang the bell and was very calm and polite. She let us see the deep wounds that she had inflicted cutting completely through the Achilles tendons on the back of both of her ankles. She was talking to us like nothing serious had happened.
She said she cut through one tendon and could not get any further when she got to the bone; it was bleeding pretty good, but it stopped and she was still alive. So she thought maybe if she did the other it would finish her off. But it stopped bleeding on its own fairly quickly as well.
Then she asked very politely if one of us wouldn't go into the bathroom and clean up the mess so that it wouldn't upset her mother. From her description and the fact that she was talking to us coherently and had a normal blood pressure... I was not expecting to find very much blood. It was a bathroom that was partially carpeted. And in the middle of the carpet there was a huge puddle of coagulated blood at least 18 inches in diameter and at least 3/4 of an inch thick in the middle. I had never seen anything quite like it.
I waited until our paramedics arrived so they could try and estimate how much blood she had lost before cleaning it up. I would have tried to get my crew to do it, but both had a history of being a little squeamish around large quantities of blood. I then basically picked up jelly fish like chunks of blood with my rubber gloved hands and flushed them down the toilet until it was mostly gone and then tried to rinse out the carpet with water and a towel. It did look less horrific after my efforts but there was no saving that section of carpet.
*Have you ever been depressed? It’s real. Some people just want to get it over with.*
Make it legal.
*Indeed - society chose to CELEBRATE mental illness. Put it on a pedestal. At least, the homosexual and transsexual forms.* Change it and the rate would go down but not that much.
*Men are more likely to shoot and hang themselves and women to take pills.* Women are always concerned with their looks. How many lesbians off themselves? Just askin’.
