How is this “shocking”? Abraham Lincoln suspended Posse Comitatus and imprisoned journalists, George Washington marched on his own brand new citizenry in the Whiskey Rebellion, and Roosevelt Imprisoned Japanese-Americans in concentration camps.
War is hell and even good leaders have to make insanely tough orders and decisions that are hard to judge when you’re not involved.
Reality check on all this — his declarations probably have little immediate effect on anything, he is basically outlawing pro-Russian political actions but those will happen under duress in any case, either the Russians succeed in subjugating the capital and installing a puppet government that can “negotiate” a settlement (surrender in other words) or they will reach a stalemate and eventually will have to deal with Zelensky.
If Zelensky holds out and continues to rule after the Russians give up and retreat (at least to the safer enclaves if not entirely) then we can better judge Zelensky’s actions and intentions. What he says or does now can only be judged in the context of a national leader with very few viable options — surrender and the country’s sovereign will is destroyed, fight on and run up a huge damage and death toll with no reasonable prospect of assistance being rendered by nuclear-blackmailed NATO.
If we do reach the other side of this, it will be important to find out what exactly was going on between the Biden administration and the government of Ukraine, and/or prominent Ukrainian business interests. But nothing really justifies what Putin has decided to do here, so the time for all of that can only come after an end to these “operations” which resemble Hitler’s invasion of Poland in September 1939. Putin can spin out any elaborate justification he can imagine, but it will only convince about 1% of the people outside Russia and who knows what percentage inside Russia.
News story was interesting — despite the sanctions truck traffic is still rolling along through Belarus between Russia and Europe, crossing the Polish border. But citizens of Poland and Ukrainian refugees are at the border trying to block this truck traffic. Russian truck driver’s comments: “I sympathize with you but have to deliver this load.” In other words, he doesn’t believe Putin’s justification but has a job to do. Sound familiar? (only following orders) ... but apparently a lot of Russian conscripts are not following orders and this is the reason why so many Russian generals are being killed on the battlefield.
It seems like only a matter of time until forces in Moscow appear in public to restrain the madness of this dangerous despot. Zelensky could in theory be every bit as much of a despot (perhaps so, perhaps not) but his potential to do harm outside his own borders are more limited. That is a comment however that I would qualify by saying, depending on what an impartial investigation shows about collaboration with the Biden regime. This is why we desperately need Trump back in office. I would hope he has enough time and energy to do this investigation, even if we have to wait until then to find out, the results will be worth knowing — and if nothing much is going on, then fine, let’s have that cleared up too. I tend to doubt that, but we need to know.
