Ukraine is holding its own: On Day 23 of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Russian advance has largely stopped on all fronts. More than three weeks into the invasion and stiff Ukrainian resistance and the seemingly never-ending Russian supply issues have prevented Russian forces from achieving their primary objectives.
Over the past week, the Russian advance was stalling, a result of extremely poor logistical arrangements and stiff Ukrainian resistance. But in the last 24 hours, there has been almost no progress at all.
“[The] Ukrainians are putting a lot of effort into defending Kyiv as you would expect them to do. [The] Ukrainians are the reason why [the Russians] haven’t been able to move forward. And it’s because they’re very actively resisting any movement by the Russians,” a senior U.S. defense official said on Thursday.

Hunter Bidens check bounced?
does anyone really think ukraine will win this. i wouldn’t be surprised if they lobbed something at one of tha nato coutries...and say russia did it.
What a BS. “Stopped” military still needs supply.
All I see is a pause on a southwestern front, and four pincers encircling most of the Ukrainian forces in the area of operations. And the pincers are eliminating the enemy within them.
A pause in the pace of battle...it happens
The notion that Kiev is the window through which you should view the war is misplaced. If anything the focus on the defense of Kiev has been undertaken to the detriment of Kharkiv, Dnipro, Mariupol, etc.
Kiev may stand defiant, but the eastern half of Ukraine is militarily being ground into dust.
Why are you so stupid?
This bizarre narrative of weaknesses in the Russian configuration has long term consequences for US military budgets. It happened at the end of the Cold War, too.
A great many congress critters started pointing out that the US does not need to spend so much on DoD because the enemy was inconsequential. And they had a point, if it had all been true.
US coverage starts and ends in Kiev. This is slowly changing as talk of Mariupol gets more attention, but up to now, that’s all that is talked about. How Kiev still stands.
70% of Ukraine troops were facing the Donbas when the war began. That number has dropped as they die and the Kiev garrison dies in lesser numbers. But in general, the Russians and the forces of the two republics over there are killing off the vast majority of the Ukraine army.
It’s a somewhat methodical process. When they are erased, and they will be, then those Russian troops will head towards Kiev. It will not be in a straight line. They will circle along the border and approach Kiev that way. This permits far faster Russian aircraft sortie turnaround re-arming at bases in Russia and using standoff weapons.
Truth is, a no fly zone would have done little. Most Russian sorties are over Russian territory, firing standoff weapons with ranges up to 100 miles.
IF you watch YouTube, you would think that Ukraine was wining the war. All the videos they show are of abandoned Russian tanks, personal carriers. etc.
According to Lara Logan Putin “didn’t go straight into Kieve” for “stategic” reasons.
Nah, that’s just propaganda and disinformation.
Here’s an update.Advance,slowdown.consolidate is normal

The Russian Federation, under Vladimir Putin, has run head-long into the same problem that the Soviet Union ran into in Afghanistan. They went in underfunded, and with a bunch of unmotivated conscripts, against an opposing force, even though it was much smaller and woefully lacking is comparable weaponry, with a really fanatical defense of their territory.
The Russians might prevail, but at only great cost to themselves, a Pyrrhic victory, useless in the end and with compounding negatives to continue into the future. To begin with, there will be food shortages, if not famine, in the land, as the coming year of crops goes unplanted, and therefore not available for harvest in that which is known as “the breadbasket” for much of the rest of Russia and the surrounding countries.
And worse, on the long term, a suddenly insolvent Russia, because of its overextended obligations, becomes not merely a pariah among nations, but a liability, further crippling the international picture in regards to international trade and peaceful relationships among nations.
In desperation, Russia may be forced to turn to a full dependency on the largesse and good graces of The Chinese Communist Party and Chairman Xi, making them a vassal state much like North Korea.
And 70% of these tanks are Ukrainian.
All I see is a pause on a southwestern front, and four pincers encircling most of the Ukrainian forces in the area of operations. And the pincers are eliminating the enemy within them.

Whole Russian operation is a classic pincer move.
Why are YOU?
His post at least had some content. Yours was nothing but name calling, showing lack of intelligence to rebut an argument.
Not only do you display ignorance when you do that but you miss an opportunity to convince him of your side
does anyone really think ukraine will win this?
Why are you so stupid?
What is your definition of Russia winning? The killing of Zelensky? Do you think Ukrainians will give up the fight then? To win, all Ukraine has to do is keep resisting, just like the Taliban, just like the Mujahadeen. There is no realistic scenario where Russia can win against a determined opposition that is supported by NATO. Even if it installs a temporary government, no one will recognize it and it will be under constant attack.
The reporting is nearly as bad as reporting on Covid. Militarily this has been over for some time.
Some FReepers question the premise of the headline and claim that the Russian army is ADVANCING, albeit slowly.
What Putin is doing is a classical Siege intended to starve Ukraine and slowly but surely advance when they weaken sufficiently.
I’m not sure what to believe anymore regarding the big picture. I’ll just take it from day to day and try to filter out what I think is propaganda from either side.
Tell that to the Azov units stuck in Mariupol.
