Op-Ed: Zelenskyy and Trump Always Agreed on a Very Powerful Point

During the Obama era, corruption in Ukraine had become an issue of national (and even international) concern. So much so, in fact, that the people of Ukraine had finally had enough.

In May 2019, they elected Volodymyr Zelenskyy, an anti-corruption figure and political outsider, as president by a landslide margin of 73.2 percent, with a similar legislative snap victory immediately following.

Zelenskyy was a Jewish comedian and actor who, ironically, became famous by starring as the fictitious president of Ukraine in a popular television series. As promised during his campaign, he immediately got to work to clean up Ukraine and eradicate the widespread corruption. He sought to “restart the justice system,” remove legal immunity for parliament members and break up the oligarchs.

President Donald J. Trump noticed. Trump reached out to Zelenskyy to congratulate him on his party’s victories and discuss the efforts to combat corruption in what the 45th American president described as a “perfect call.” Zelenskyy shared how much he had learned from Trump and how he too was now “trying to work hard … to ‘drain the swamp’ here in our country [of Ukraine].

I looked at your link. I could barely hear the conversation Biden was having. If I understood it correctly, it took place in 2014. Apparently there was a billion dollar loan guarantee in connection with oil development in Ukraine. Biden said something about Poroshenko needing to get rid of an official (presumably) corrupt. After Biden said Poroshenko had 6 hours to get rid of the guy or loose the loan guarantee, the official was removed and the guarantee went forward. Also Biden’s son had a cushy job connected to the oil industry in Ukraine. My question is whether the guy fired was worse than his replacement? Also, as oil was involved, who knows what big money pressures might have been appliable against either Trump or Biden?

My thoughts on other reasons why President Trump did not use this information. How many business deals were his children involved in that could be used by Democrats against Trump in the election. I remember noting that there was a push to get rid of the former woman Ambassador to Armenia who Turkey wanted gone because she was not friendly about Turkey’s genocide against Armenia around 1919. At that time I saw something about how Trump’s sons were involved in business deals with the Turkish president’s sons or sons-in-law, don’t remember exact details. Also talk about Trump and some kind of hotel deal in Turkey. So who knows what there was to be dug up if people started looking. Having been following presidential polital issues for more than 50 years, there is always some kind of reveal that each side is holding in reserve in case they need something worse than the other guy is saying. I have heard som doozies over the years although I can’t remember any at the moment. I guess Edward’s love child was an example that did see the light early in the electoral process. Politics—a nasty game.
