ROUND 7 FINAL PAIR (TOCT seed/year/BB rank/title/act)
4 1957 3 "Little Darlin'" The Diamonds
3 1955 2 "Rock Around the Clock" Bill Haley & His Comets
I am genuinely saddened that *Mona Lisa* got edged out by a derp-wop song, but that is what it is.
Thanks for the thread, it was fun again. My vote is already cast, and I am pretty sure you know how I voted < BG >
Take care, and I look forward to your next Music thread
I picked Rock Around The Clock. Little Darlin’ is a great song, but it was an easy choice. If Mona Lisa had won, the choice would have been more difficult.
Yeah, I have always liked Little Darlin’, but Mona Lisa is better in so many ways.
"Mona Lisa" would have been my pick if it had made it to the final round. During its chart run, it spent several weeks at #1 in the summer of 1950 while "Little Darling" never made it to the top spot. However, the Diamonds' opus almost certainly saw a lot more action on the Oldies playlists in subsequent years.
Can’t believe it ended this way. Little Darlin’ is a great song, but I can’t see it bubbling to the top. Oh well!
(Doo-wop? I guess sort of.)
It probably would....it’s great. Not just really good, but very emblematic.
Not too surprised when we likely end up with the same overall winner as last time.
Hoping for something a little better this time for the ‘60s.
My favorite song from the '60s is New Lovers by Pat Boone (1960), but it's likely to be a long shot for the top spot.
“’Rock Around The Clock’ defined the 1950s decade”.
Absolutely.
I never knew that existed. I’ll listen to it tonight.
I'm keeping an open mind. :)
The Singer version of Rock Around The Clock was great! I’m not totally sure that it’s the same song as Bill Haley though.
I could be wrong. It’s amazing how different some adaptations are.
Since you like that, you definitely need to listen to this:

It's Come On Take A Chance by Gene McDaniels (1961). It's definitely in my top ten. I grew up listening to this one, so of course it's going to be special to me. It's the flip side of A Hundred Pounds Of Clay.
Move it On Over--Hank Williams & His Drifting Cowboys (1947)
The lyrics of this one are full of newsmakers and celebrities. In later versions, the reference to Premier Patrice Lumumba of Congo Léopoldville was cut out following his murder in January, 1961, but this is the original.
Top 40, News, Weather & Sports--Mark Dinning (1961)
For fifty plus years, I thought the opening notes of "Satisfaction" were played by a saxophone. It was only recently that I learned that they were played by a guitar hooked up to some sort of electronic gadget.
"Hey, Jude" would have been much better if they had shortened that annoyingly repetitious coda.
That one is wild. I’m very surprised that I haven’t heard it before.
Hey FJ, I really enjoy these musical conversations.
