Washington Post owner Jeff Bezos just solidified himself as one of the biggest climate activist hypocrites in world politics.
Superyacht and BezosThe city of Rotterdam reportedly gave the green light to disassemble one of Netherland’s oldest bridges to make way for the third richest man in the world’s superyacht, according to BBC. Bezos postured himself as an environmental icon for years. In 2020, Bezos made headlines when he pledged $10 billion dollars of his personal wealth to form the Bezos Earth Fund.
The hypocrisy is truly astounding: The Conversation reported that “a superyacht with a permanent crew, helicopter pad, submarines and pools emits about 7,020 tons of C02 a year.” The Environmental Protection Agency found that “[a] typical passenger vehicle emits about 4.6 metric tons of carbon dioxide per year.”
Washington Post reporter Miriam Berger wrote, flatly: “The Dutch company Oceano has been building the massive vessel for an estimated $500 million in the nearby city of Alblasserdam. Once completed this year, the ship, known as Y721, will be the world’s largest sailing yacht, according to Boat International.” Bezos’ previous yacht was reportedly listed for the humble price of “131 million euros ($158 million).”
The yacht is a sailing ship, with three massive masts providing its moving power. It's not clear if it has a backup diesel for propulsion, but probably does for electric power. Oceanco built the ship based on some of its previous sailing yacht designs, which it claims are powerful and ecologically friendly.
See, eco friendly. No doubt jeff bought carbon credits from algore to offset the NON eco friendly parts. Now, if we were to eliminate any and all components that were derived from anything petro, there might be a wooden dugout canoe left. Now, be quiet peasants.
Totally Sustainable...
Is Bezos offsetting his private jet as well?
Just can’t believe no one thought to do the math on the bridge and the masts.
Curious that Gates also commissioned a $600M yacht last year, later cancelled. Methinks these types seek an escape to ride out wars, resets, viruses, etc.
I find it odd they don’t fit the masts elsewhere after passing under the bridge. Has to be other shipyards capable of that task.
I'd guess they did do the math (subtraction) The city will probably make millions in the difference between what Bezos will pay them compared to the cost of removing part of the bridge and putting it back. (And only little people are inconvenienced by the closing of the bridge for a while.)
this should have to be posted in EVERY article they print on gloBULL warming.
bezo$ “superyacht with a permanent crew, helicopter pad, submarines and pools emits about 7,020 tons of C02 a year.”
Wouldn’t it be easier to just step the masts rather than disassemble a whole bridge?
There are pictures of the yacht with it’s masts and they aren’t the traditional stepped masts of earlier (particularly wooden) sailing ships. They look like single-piece items to me.
Oddly enough, the ships I was on in the Navy weren’t that big.
Per an article I read this week, he has a support yacht that trails the main yacht. The support yacht has a helipad because the main yacht masts and sails made it impossible/dangerous to land on.

Is that his bugout plan? Maybe he’s going to live on it most of the time and save on taxes.
So, it’s actually a superyaght fleet.
I wonder when he’ll add an aircraft carrier to it.
He sounds more like a Bond supervillain everyday.
I’m torn. I love yachts and their beautiful lines, but think Bezos is a POS.
Now that you mention it, he does have his own space rockets.
Jeff “Moonraker” Bezos.
