Got Heat? Coal Futures UP 133% Since Jan 1 2021, Natural Gas Futures Price UP 93%, WTI Spot Price UP 82%

“Stay warm. It’s a cold one out there today.” – Congressman Murray from Parks & Recreation.

Yes, its a cold one out there. But the Biden Administration is engaging in reducing fossil fuel supply and pushing towards “green” energy such as inefficient solar panels, eagle-killing wind turbines, and ocean turbines.

As a consequence, natural gas futures are up 93% from January 1, 2021 while coal futures are up 133% and WTI Crude spot price is up 82%.

Any wonder why food prices up 40%?

Stay warm. It’s a cold one out there today. And The Federal government doesn’t care.

The Feds are so concerned with pleasing The Squad and Leftist Lunatics that they don't care if we freeze or starve.

I just got heating oil on Saturday in my little corner of Pennsylvania. $625.00 for 193 gallons. $3.23 9/10 a gallon.

Nobody is more bullish on oil and gas than Joe Biden.

Propane up here in N. GA. is about double what it was last year.

My heating bill for this past December was only 90% higher than it was for the December before that. So I avoided the dreaded doubling of the bill.

Thank you Brandon for keeping the increase under 100%.

My power + gas bill December 2020 was $316. This past December it was only $152 (just the power bill, no gas bill anymore).

Biden didn’t do that. Me installing a solar system last year and converting my two gas appliances into ultra efficient electric ones did that.

“Green” energy like the Dims try to force onto us is horrible. But if you do solar from a libertarian angle (using my money to make my own power to help wean me off government control-freaks and their utility cronies) it works well if you’re in a good situation for it. Even in the winter I worry a lot less than I used to about the Dims jacking up energy costs.

If you don’t like it:
Go drill and refine your own LGN & heating oil.
Go buy a big rig truck [$200k] & get trained [3 months, $10k] and haul your own supplies.
Or you can just rely on those snow covered solar panels and frozen windmills to save you.

See how easy it is lefties? Watch out, you might get a blister.

At that price, you might be better off using electric space heaters. If your electric is under 13.7 cents per kwh it definitely is (and that’s assuming whatever your burning propane in is 100% efficient, which it isn’t).

Numbers:

Propane provides 91,500 BTU per gallon (some part of this, at least 7.5%, goes up the flue. If your furnace is older than say 20 years it’s more like 20%).

1 kwh of electricity provides 3,143 BTU.

Therefore 1 gallon of propane provides the same amount of heat as 26.8kW of electric resistance heat (space heaters).

26.8kW @ 13.7 cents per kwh = $3.67

Electric where I live is about 12 cents per kwh.

Excellent post.
The feds are going to try and force everybody to switch from nat gas to electric.
I had a heat pump house back in the 80s, it was not a “warm” heat because it only heats the air minimally above the setpoint and needs a LOT of airflow to compensate thus feeling drafty.

Wow. I remember in 1978 #2 fuel oil was .19/gal.

I have a heat pump house that was built in 2017, my only other choice for heat is propane.

Newer heat pumps work a lot better than the ones they had in the 80s.

As I had the house built for me, on my own lot, I made sure that they didn’t forget to put insulation in (I’ve seen that elsewhere..) and I went through myself before the drywall went up and sealed with caulk and Great Stuff the toe plate and any gaps in the exterior walls (they did use house wrap), and after the drywall went in I sealed the top plates in the attic with Great Stuff.

Now, unlike my old house, I actually have to look at the weather report or go outside to find out if it’s windy out!
And it will easily hold 68F at 17F outdoor without using any aux heat.

But as I just demonstrated, even if I had to use aux heat, at today’s propane prices, that’s cheaper than propane.

Smart moves on your build.
My house is small and pretty well built so with nat gas the heating bills are pretty trivial.
But I fear the day when the feds will make nat gas so expensive I have to switch.
My 80s heat pump was a “Fedders” they were so unreliable the neighborhood had a class action lawsuit against them. I wasn’t the original owner so I didn’t get anything from the settlement.

I didn’t know Fedders made anything bigger than a window unit!

My heat pump is a Trane.

I have a feeling that by the time natural gas comes to this part of the county, the land my house is on will be worth more as commercial property to put a Taco Bell and a used car lot on. Which, if I’m still here, is fine with me, I’ll sell!

Electricity rates in my area $.43 p/kwh. The power company just applied for a $.03 rate increase that was granted, $.46 p/kwh oh boy. Currently over $200.00 for a few lights and a refrigerator
