China can steal our technology but we are still always ahead of them. And they can also never steal our people, although Biden is replacing them quickly...

Uh-huh.

And what is the per-unit cost of the F-35?

The future of military aviation is in stealthy, pilotless drones. The Navy won’t admit that the era of surface combatants is over. That realization will come only when many young sailors will have died horribly.

The F-35’s strength is in its situational awareness. No longer is it about the biggest, the most maneuverable, or the most heavily armored. First sight first kill is what modern warfare is all about.

Why is it better than the F22. Have they simply quit updating the Raptor? Is it now obsolete?

Over promised, under delivered, way way over cost.

And what is the per-unit cost of the F-35?

The latest tranches of the F-35A at $78 million aren't any more expensive than the new $80 million F-15EX the Air Force is buying to replace the F-15C.

The F-35B and C cost much more.

The F-22 is no longer in production, and the F-22 and F-35 have vastly different roles.

That’s what I remembered.

As in a more than $100 million unit cost.

Half the parts are made in China. The Chinese, thanks to Cisco, put bugs in PENTAGON routers, and likely have ALL the schematics for the plane. and every other weapons system. We have NO advantage. I wouldn’t be surprised if in a time of conflict, they are magically shut off, and fall from the sky.

Moonpig, and it’s dreaming to think this is safe from S-300s and S-400s. It has a bigger radar cross section than an F-117 and only has a decent amount of stealth from the front aspect, from the rear, it’s a normal jet.

It’s main strength is networking. If it ever gets caught by a near peer, it cannot outrun much, can’t turn, and has short legs.

But it has absolute dominance in the number of Congressional districts with a share of the contracts.

The F-35 is a smallish AWACS that can shoot some missiles

Wasn’t the F-22 tooling destroyed?

Almost nothing about the F-35’s “advanced” capabilities have anything to do with the actual airframe.

If the F-35’s sensors and software were fitted onto an F-15, F-16, F-18, much of the whole whiz bang capabilities would be exactly the same. I’d bet a Predator or Globalhawk could get fitted up with a lot of the equipment and perform admirably as a multirole fighter with the pilot sitting in Nevada.

Harder to bribe congressmen when you’re selling software and not an airframe, though... so they run with the airframe and bribe the congressmen.

IIRC Obama forced all the tooling to be destroyed for the raptor. So we cannot source replacement parts.

35 is supposed to be significantly cheaper then the 22’s.
