I was an appliance tech for 32 years and all of my stuff is ancient with no electronics.
Electromechanical rarely fails and is fixable.

I really don’t understand people who are fine with their appliances wiretapping them and recording everything they say and sending it to Amazon/NSA.

I don’t have any smart appliances other than PCs and cell phones.

The scary thing is there have been multiple occasions when I talk about something and then start getting online ads about the thing I talked about.

I have disabled the driver on my PC microphones in the past, but I have to have online meetings for work and had to re-enable them.

Have heard and believe that this is done by IDing and listening to you on the smartphones of other people.

Best to test for one’s self. . . may make one reconsider the guest list. . .

I can’t believe how much people rely on their cell phones. If that network ever gets hacked or disabled they are doomed.

And all the energy required to support the items in the future will be generated by wind turbines and solar panels which can be another source of additional disasters.

And who controls/owns the internet in the future?

Can the cloud compromise our national security?

>>Because the lights do go out<<

Not to worry — place your faith in solar cells and wind turbines and totally divorce yourself from the accursed fossil fuels. /s

I for one welcome our artificially intelligent pleasure bot overlord angels descended from the cloud and their internet connected minions in all their various shapes and sizes.

I would wager that our dependence on the internet in general will one day bite us back bigly.

The recent Amazon Web Services (AWS) outage is a powerful reminder about the detriments of “smart” technology, which is gone in an instant once the “cloud” goes down.

Forget about 'going down', how about when it's up and they decide that certain people are using too much of a resource, i.e. gas, electricity and you should be throttled back.

You house is too hot/cold you use too much of a resource {based on your political leaning} and there fore you lose.

If you think this is too radical, think about fakebook, google or and service provided by big tech.

They already control paypal, gofundme, and other financial institutions, so how big a leap is it to restricting your gas flow?

I also insist on one motor, one machine. No combination wood/metal working machinery for me.

Phones that are everything are a mistake. The separate GPS receiver is a lot better than the phone's.

““The Cloud” is a marketer’s name for some other guy’s computer.”...LOL. So true. The “cloud” is just another name for a data center/server farm...been around for years. This site is in the “cloud” if you buy the marketing version/name of a server farm...:) I’d bet good money the servers this site are on sit in a data center somewhere. FR may “own” the servers but I doubt they are in someone’s garage or spare bedroom.

I don’t even have a Smart Phone - I need an upgrade, but I’m going to stick with the flips as long as they make them.

Might even have to go the ‘Jitterbug’ route. *SHRUG*

I have a dumb phone, too.

All I want it for is calls and texts.
