Glocks are known to go off with alarming regularity when the trigger is pulled.
Other than the spin put on this by the LA Times, most of the Glock negligent discharges were due to the trigger being pulled. Go figure.
One specific case involved a cop at a gun store who was showing his firearm to the counter worker, and when he reholstered, the drawstring at the waist of his windbreaker got caught in the trigger guard, so when he pushed the gun into the holster the gun discharged. That is not the fault of the Glock, but was blamed on the Glock.
Then of course another famous Glock negligent discharge was by an undercover DEA officer at a school show-and-tell waiving his Glock in .40 cal, saying "I'm the only one professional enough in this room to touch this weapon," then promptly shot himself while reholstering.
At one point a majority of police agencies were using Glocks in .40 cal, so any negligent discharges were bound to involve a Glock. In fact, negligent discharges while holstering became known as "Glock leg."
Now that many departments have moved on to Sigs and Smith M&Ps, Glock bashing isn't as popular anymore.
Don't tease me like that!
Pudgy ditz for firearms responsibility??
Absolutely. I own both types
There are different dummy cartridges, some have dimpled or fired primers, some have a rubber insert for primer, some have holes drilled in them. Some have no way to distinguish them from live ammos - the pic above is for an ad for dummy 45LC. The only saving grace of those rounds above is they are sized so they can't be loaded into a 45 cal gun.

Hey!
It’s Italian.
An immigrnt.
We should not lose sight of the fact that Barwin shot the cinematographer. Presumably he was to pretend to shoot at another actor. Loaded or unloaded he was never to aim it at the cinematographer who runs the camera. There were so many negligent acts here. And a wife and mother and up and comer in her craft is now dead.
Oh I understand the use of the 45 long colt and where the demand comes from. I only mean that outside that subset of shooters, 45 long colt is not as typical as say .22lr which most if not all hunters/shooters have.
Not that hollywood would have any rounds with them leftover from their weekend hobbies as their hobbies do not include shooting.
I guess my point is, when I grew up, there was a chance you might find a .22lr round laying around where it shouldnt be, dropped in the parking lot where it fell out of ones truck. You would be hard pressed to find a 45 long colt laying there.
The only way this incident could have been happenstance, imho, is if someone accidentally dropped a round near where the blank rounds were. Accidentally having a pocket full of .45 long colt is darn near impossible even where shooting is a way of life. These live rounds got there somehow and it wasnt by accident. That is all I meant to convey.
.45 Colt, Yup.
.
So Why do some folk
Squawk at “45 Long Colt?”
I’ve had some heated
Discussions over that.
“I don’t know how many times I’ve been handed a gun with the breech closed and was told “I already checked it”. I immediately opened it up before taking a step and checked it myself.“
This ^^^^^ 1000 times this ^^^^^^
It is impossible to fire any firearm “accidentally”. It is always and only neglect and incompetence, at the very least.
I guess I count that as incompetence.
I know that mistakes happen and I’m certainly not perfect. But when it comes to guns I think it’s best to be ruthless in placing total responsibility on the person holding the gun. I blame only myself for any mishaps I’ve had.
It is true that you can make them any way that you want to. I consider the commercially made dummy cartridges to be a complete waste of money. They charge a lot for something that can be made basically for nothing. Personally I prefer to use an already fired primer in mine, and I mark up the cases with a permanent marker. The ones that I have made have mostly been used for training purpose to show people how to load handguns, rifles, shotguns and magazines.
So far I haven't heard anything from a news source that indicated that dummy cartridges were being used although this would be the most reasonable explanation for what happened.
True. If they were using blanks though, and that’s what I’ve been led to believe, blanks do not look like live rounds. They are designed that way. Either there is a wad at the end of the casing or the round is crimped. A live round has a bullet in the end. So do dummy rounds. It’s hard to miss the difference.
Anyone using firearms is responsible to know these things. Even an actor like Arec Barrwin.
There is on record that they intended to load with dummy cartridges, which makes sense if they are going to point the gun at the camera, since that's how they do it.
The account from the armorer described 5 dummy cartriges to be loaded, 4 with holes drilled in them, and one with no primer. If true, I'm surprised a professional set would use a mix like that.
After it was fired, Halls picked up the gun from a pew in the church set and took it to the armorer. Gutierrez Reed was told to open the gun so he could see what was inside. Halls said there were five rounds in the gun, at least four of which had "dummy" casings, as indicated by a hole on the side. There was one without the hole. He advised this round did not have the "cap" on it and was just the casing. David advised the incident was not a deliberate act, according to the affidavit.

I read "cap" as primer, since I think in terms of percussion caps. But I now wonder if by "cap" he meant bullet, in which case he pulled 4 dummy rounds, and one casing from a live-fired round.
An extra five minutes to step outside and dry fire all six could have saved a life.
It sounds like this is a real low-budget flick and the pressure was on to cut corners wherever possible. What a horrible outcome where saving a few minutes cost a life.
But when it comes to guns I think it’s best to be ruthless in placing total responsibility on the person holding the gun.
Ouch.
IF THAT HAD BEEN YOU OR ME HOLDING THAT PISTOL, OUR ASSES WOULD BE IN JAIL RIGHT NOW FOR MISHANDLING A LOADED WEAPON AND KILLING ANOTHER PERSON. Has ole Alex been arrested? He hasn't?? Oh, my bad. I would have thought he would. But, that's just me.
