The Resistance Library Podcast: The History of Charlton Heston

On this episode of the Resistance Library Podcast, Sam and Dave discuss Charlton Heston. Charlton Heston is a singular figure in American history and consciousness. During the early period of his acting career, he was known for historical and Biblical epics.

After his career waned throughout the 1960s, he was reborn as a science fiction actor, thanks to his starring role in Planet of the Apes. While often viewed as a bit of camp today, this film and the series that spawned it was the biggest popular science fiction movie franchise in the pre-Star Wars era.

For our purposes, however, Charlton Heston is an unsung hero because he was a champion of limited government, especially as it pertains to Second Amendment rights. He served as president of the National Rifle Association for five terms, only retiring when he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2002. Starting his involvement in politics in the Civil Rights era, he later gravitated toward conservatism, organizing a political action committee to support Ronald Reagan.

Tremendous actor (see “Touch of Evil” if you haven’t) and all-around great guy. His liberal ‘friends’ borrowed firearms from him more than once during the riots.

The only time I have ever been to Boulder was to see Charlton Heston speak.

That’s a keeper. It occurred to me that Charlton, like Olivier, once played Othello in face paint so he’d be on the ‘cancel culture’ hit list if he were still with us.

I despise Tim Roth!

Hollywood star Tim Roth has verbally attacked Charlton Heston for his controversial views on gun laws in America.
Roth claims he would not have appeared in TIM BURTON'S remake of PLANET OF THE APES had he known he would be sharing a scene with Heston,
who featured in the 1968 original version of the film.

Fumes Roth, "I was contracted so I couldn't get out of it.
i feel very strongly about that monster. I made my feelings clear on set but got myself in make-up and put my gear on,
including rubber hands so I wouldn't be infected if I touched him - and went in.
We did the scene and I promptly left."

Sounds like quite the professional. It wasn’t a good movie shoot all around – I met the script writer, and he said Burton broke down crying at least once during filming. Timothy Clark Duncan once refused to go to set because they sent a Lincoln Town Car instead of a limo to pick him up at his home, which violated his contract.

Saw him speak twice at CPAC. While waiting for the elevator it stopped at my floor and opened and there he was. Smiled and said, “ There is plenty of room come on in.” Have an autographed photo of him with a shotgun over his shoulder.

I shook his hand at a political event back in 1994.
