Let’s do a little thought experiment. The Turtle got eleven Republicans in the Senate to vote for cloture on the debt limit extension. Many Conservatives are screaming that he surrendered and all is lost. But what would have happened if he hadn’t done that?
If there were no debt limit extension, the government would “shut down.” Anyone with half a brain would realize that no such thing would happen. Lots of “non-essential” (that means most gummint paycheck cashers) would go home and cry to the alleged news people that they couldn’t buy their favorite flavor of Häagen-Dazs to imitate Saint Joe the Benighted. Drive-bys would trumpet the hardships of people who will get full back pay once the curtain falls on this theatrical exercise. And before long, inevitably, Republicans would get blamed for the (non)chaos, and the push to dislodge dictatorial Dems would be set back a step. Not good.
The next push would be for Dems to lean harder on Senators Manchin and Sinema to get rid of the filibuster rule. Since there would be visuals of Republican cruelty to suffering public servants, it would get harder and harder for those two to hold the line. Once they crumble, no one’s life, liberty, or property would ever again be safe. HR1 would be just the start and, with it, your right to vote would be extinguished, giving permanent power to people who hate you.
So, what actually happened with the cloture vote? Mitch got his caucus to step out of the way of the Democrats’ rush to the cliff. He limply held the red flag in front of the Democrat bull and let them run right through. No Republican voted to increase the debt limit. And it’s unlikely that any will,

I’m reading that the Debt limit was extended....not increased.
A morning dose of Clownhall Conservative, Inc nonsense.
He took a yuge gamble and Schmucky inexplicably pulled the pin on a grenade and jumped on it for him.
AOC flanking him has him shitting his depends worse than Biden.
Yep
But it’s important to remember that he’s also owned by Wall Street investment banks and will ultimately do whatever they want … even if it means whining in public about the Republicans who stand in his way, while secretly telling Manchin and Sinema to hold their ground to block the lunacy of the Democratic agenda.
I’m glad there was no shutdown. Those were always a joke. Me Joe Taxpayer gets to pay for a million gov workers to go on paid vacations.
Had there been a shut down it would have destroyed our chances of electing Youngkin governor of Virginia and retaking the Virginia House of Delegates.
I glad for the short extension.
After the Democrats gloated and did victory laps when he caved, McConnell responded by declaring that the Republicans will not help the Democrats raise the debt ceiling again. Kind of like Lucy promising Charlie Brown that she will not pull the football away the next time he tries to kick it.
What's the difference? Just a different word for the same thing. Tired of the word games.
Offer Senators Manchin and Sinema committees and flood them with campaign cash to flip to Republicans. Once they flip this conversation is over. The senators can always use the excuse that the Democrat party has turned to liberal.
They would be about as republican as Romney. The important part would be control.
With about 90% of government workers you can’t tell if they are on vacation or not. What difference does it make? McConnell is an ass.
I totally agree. It is refreshing to hear that as a strategy. Kill their majority and most of the nonsense stops.
That one slipped my mind. Nov 2, that’s around the corner. The results on that one will be interesting. Any thoughts on the outcome?
Well I always hate paying them to not put in a full honest 10% day...
All he did was give the democrats more time to set up more permanent power to their party Schumer gave the spit in your face speech and the finger.
Likely take back the House of Delegates, governor race tossup… shutdown would have energized the Dems
