Any Mathematicians here know how to publish a proof of a conjecture as an amateur?

So I did a proof of the Collatz Conjecture, and am wondering if anybody here familiar with the process of getting it published. This place has a lot of experts, and if the proof holds, it would be news in itself.

Proof is here:

You must have been working on this for over 6 years!

Ask some of the presenters at the YouTube channel Numberphile. Serious. These guys are connected.

Brady Haran is the owner and operator.

Math is hard, mm~kay. I loved geometry class in high school and being exposed to logic and math at the same time. That was the 70’s. My brain is not near as elastic as it used to be.

Good luck on your proof!

More for everyone, here:

Let me just say, it “is an extraordinarily difficult problem, completely out of reach of present day mathematics.”

I wasnt aware of this 'problem'. Seems entertaining. But also seems you arent the first to claim proving it.

Regarding publishing, if your serious, you want to go to a mathematics related journal, submit it, where they will get it peer reviewed to see if you really have something new.

It was actually a couple of hours a day for two weeks, but I have good pattern recognition ability.

It is frustrating to see people saying it is unsolvable when the answer is so clear.

The problem is I think most pros don’t take an amateur seriously. I’ll try contacting those guys, but my bet is I will never hear back from any of them.

But thank you for the advice.

That is the thing. it is out of reach of mathematics because of the stupid two rules. I simplified it to one rule, which shows how the formula is processing the numbers.

I have no idea why nobody has ever done that. Once you do it, it is a simple algebraic equation.

I did that, and was given a terse reply it didn’t meet their editorial guidelines.

What I will settle for at this point is one mathematician telling me where the proof is wrong, which it is not.

Looks like you can submit it here:

I’d ask them for the ‘guidelines’ so you could make sure you conform to them, and resubmit. If you are going to be rejected after review, the reviewers should be able to say why, at least in general.

What is frustrating is, the equation is just processing numbers based on a representation of them as a one plus a series of 2^x, of varying powers.

At this point, I am probably just here screaming into the wilderness.

But thank you for the article.

Thank you. My suspicion is there is some unspoken psychological tone “real” mathematicians use, and my writing comes off amateurish.

But I will try to chase down the journal and see if it will give any input. It is difficult to find who to email as submissions are by form, and replies come from a send email that doesn’t accept replies.

I just read the paper…before submitting it to a journal, get someone to proofread it. I spotted a number of errors.

Although I don’t know what it is that you have, congratulations.

I do hope your proof holds up to examinations.

Did you remember to carry the 2?

Document your proof as well, so that some jackal at the journal cannot claim it.

You could also try submitting to present your paper at a conference and publication in the conference proceeding. The standards for getting a paper published at a conference aren’t quite as high as the standards for a journal publication. The down side is you have to present at the conference and likely have to register and pay the conference fee. Also, be aware that a publication likely wont take your paper after its been published at a conference or somewhere else. Copyright issues as whoever publishes first now owns them as part of your agreement to let them publish. You can change the paper and add in something new or a twist to publish a new paper, but it cant be the same paper.
