He was linked to Cheri Jo Bates for a long time. It was mentioned in Graysmith in his 1986 book.

How do you know he turned out to be a serial killer if the police never followed up on it?
Because about 15 years later I saw a picture of him in the newspaper. He had just been executed for kidnapping, raping, torturing and murdering hitch hikers in Northern California.
I had gotten a ride from him and ... uh... escaped. I’ve told the story before on FR.
For a couple of years after my escape I had his license plate memorized and I was working as a security guard. So whenever there was an incident I reported him, thinking that yes I was filing a false police report but I had some things I wanted to finish up with him. Cops NEVER followed up.
I didn’t see it in the article but do you know where he was when he died in 2018?
Yeah, I don't think it was John Carroll Lynch (Drew Carey's TV brother) who did the killing.
Poste was the link between the Zodiac killings and the earlier Riverside murder, so he was the likely killer.
I don't know what new evidence they have that may have clinched this.

I was in a car with my then bf years ago driving south on 19th ave in Phoenix. Saw a pickup truck with a homemade camper shell on it; on the back instead of a door it had a drop down piece that flapped over a piece that was upright, the bottom piece about 3 feet or so high and the drop down looked like 4 feet and hung over the bottom piece by a little.
There was some kind of lock on it, like a chain with a master lock and coming down from the gap between (when pushed out) was a black kids arm trying desperately to get the lock or open up the doors to get out. Was very obvious. I told my bf at the time to get up there and see who was driving to stop it and he would not. I kept saying can’t you see that kid is trapped and trying to get out? I think he was chicken and made out like I was crazy.
I made him pull over to where I could use the pay phone and called the police. I even memorized the plate and to my frustration the girl on the phone acted ho hum another nut. I really do not think she took me seriously.
A week later it came out that someone had tortured and brutally chopped up a young black boy, a kid, and left his body out in South Moutain, which can be reached by taking 19th ave south.
Still bothers me.
That kid was so close to freedom. And the parallel in your story is that the cops did NOTHING.

This was all before cell phones, btw.
The way the girl on the phone was I even wondered if it got to the cops. I tried desperately to get my bf to go after that truck and then the only option I had was to call the police and the person on the phone just did not seem to care. I kept repeating and repeating you need to get someone out here now but she sounded so unaffected. I have always wondered if the cops were told or did they go and did not see anyone it was maddening. I so regret I could not make anyone believe me even though my bf saw it for himself. I cannot understand that at all. Was treated like just a dramatic queen by both.
I do not understand your boyfriend’s actions. I don’t even want to understand them, that’s gonna be sumthin he will bear in the next life.
Of course, neither do I understand the killer’s actions, and their punishment will be far greater. You can be there at his eternal tribunal, God will give you the memory of his description and license number. Everyone will be held accountable and it will be just. The boy will have his justice and you will likely bear an undue burden of guilt until then.
