USN and USAF Veteran. I found an old paystub dated March, 1980 which was right before he retired as an E9 with 26 years of service. Base pay was $1,629.60 a month. That works out to about $20,000/yr or roughly 10 bucks an hour.
We can't hire stockers where I work for that rate now.
Korean War Veteran, two Vietnam tours and never heard him comment about what he saw there. Great man, loved his country and will be missed.
Also reposting some photos from what I believe was around 1966 ~ 1967 when he was at Phan Rang Air Base. He had a friend who had a camera.
99.51 a MONTH food ration. How far would that go today?
Papa is in the middle
He was born in 1931, so he was probably around 35 here.

One of my dads friends we were stationed with stateside.
Thanks for sharing the photos.
I salute your Dad, too.
Your dad had a terrific son. Well done!
I am sorry to hear of the loss of your dad. That is one of the hardest points in life when you realize he is no longer there for good times or a simple chat about how things are going.
Nice. Enjoy the good memories.
Thanks for posting, and a salute to your Dad.
Thanks for the pictures. It brought back memories for me too. I went to Bien Hoa, Vietnam, as an E-4, in 1970-71.
May his soul rest in peace, and may Perpetual Light shine upon him.
Condolences to you.
Such wonderful memories for you.
Many blessings to you.
I am saddened by your loss. The pictures were poignant.
Thank you for sharing.
It reminds me that we all, if fortunate, get old and pass on.
Your dad was fortunate, as are we.
May we see him in Heaven!
Every person is unique, irreplaceable, has specific purposes here :) so glad to know your dad helped many through his life and his service, here and abroad.
Every moment of a person’s life is important.
It’s kind of interesting how some times we learn more or realize more about our parents after they are not here. That to me says any teaching from parent/adult to child doesn’t (and shouldn’t) end when a child reaches 18, or 21, or ever.
Thanks for posting this, and my condolences for your loss.
With time, the pain recedes, and when you think of your dad, a big grin will appear on your face, and you will remember that time when Dad did this or that...:)
And that is a wonderful thing indeed. Funny, my Dad had a very distinctive voice, and he used to be the featured speaker at the town Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day celebrations in our town.
Since he passed, I had often thought “I wish I could hear his voice again” since he did not live in the age of ubiquitous video recorders as we do today.
Then, I found an old VHS recording of one of his speeches on Memorial Day 1995, and it affected me deeply to hear his voice again. In a good way.
My condolences and what a nice tribute for your Dad. RIP. Grateful for his service.
One of the GREATEST GENERATION.
FATHER GOD,
Comfort CodeJockey as he mourns the death of his father. Thank You his father passed down the love of GOD, family, and country to him.
Thank You for the good memories CodeJockey has of his father.
In JESUS’ Name we pray. AMEN.
Love the pictures, by the way...:)
Hahahaha...by the way, on that pay stub, did SOMEONE really live on a street named “Snark Steet”???
If so, that’s awesome!
Thank you for sharing. My condolences on your loss. Looks like you have lots of good memories to draw on.
This was at his Memorial Day speech in 1995 where he got into the newspapers in a bad way for saying we were right to drop the bomb on the Japanese, and if we had more, we should have dropped them had they not surrendered...
(He is in dead center at the Change of Command Ceremony aboard DD-857 for his new Captain to his right shaking hands)
Thanks for sharing. God bless your dad.
RIP…condolences for your loss of a great man…how fortunate both of you were/are…
Thank you for sharing! A great Patriot your father. Our mission seemed so clear back then. Stop the communists there so they don’t come here. We stopped them there! God bless your family
Thanks for posting.
I really enjoy the old pictures that capture everyday life.
So thankful for all the honorable men who made an influence on my life, as I know you are especially your father.
Sorry for your loss.
