A group of parents is asking California’s public school system to ban teachers from asking students to recite chants to Aztec gods, including one worshiped with human sacrifices. The parents also contend that the ethnic studies program that the state adopted earlier this year violates the U.S. Constitution.
In Aztec tradition, an impersonator of Tezcatlipoca would be sacrificed with his heart removed to honor the deity.
The model curriculum was described this week as “blatantly unconstitutional” by the Thomas More Society, which is representing the parents in the legal action against the state of California Board of Education.
"Our clients are not opposed to having students learn about different cultures and religions, including the practices of the Aztecs," the Society said in a statement.
"But the California State Board of Education’s approved Ethnic Studies Model Curriculum goes far beyond that by directing students to pray to Aztec deities. This portion of the Ethnic Studies Model Curriculum is not only offensive, but blatantly unconstitutional."
Thomas More included an assessment from Dr. Alan Sandstrom, an anthropology professor at Purdue University in Indiana.
Sandstrom supports the curriculum's objectives, but considers the chant a mistake. "The affirmation as presented amounts to a religious activity that I think has no place in public schools," he said.
Kudos to the parents for getting to the heart of the matter.
Well, at least it rained.
Public school have out-lived their usefulness.
Just ask for equal time to sing “JesusLoves the Little Children.” I’ll bet they shut it right down.
When I was this headline I thought for sure it must be Babylon Bee.
Gee.
Whatever happened to “separation of church and state?”
Good one!
Just damn obscene. How more sick can these so-called educators get? Yes, I know it's a stupid question.
Next up: Teaching of and practicing Satanic rituals.
I'm not a religious man, but if Jesus is really going to come back, Dear Lord get here ASAP!

beyond amazing
I wonder if Christianity gets equal time.
If they're already chanting to a deity that had human sacrifices performed for it in the past, I think it IS a satanic ritual.
Well, the parents could choose one or two teachers to complete the ceremony.
“I’m not a religious man, but if Jesus is really going to come back, Dear Lord get here ASAP!”
FRiend, Jesus doesn’t want you to be religious.
He loves you gave his life for you.
He wants to save you and for you to know Him. He wants to be your friend!
Ask Him to forgive you from all your sins and give Him your life.
Then when Jesus comes, you can come with us. Because you sure don’t want the other place!
See you on the other side, and thank you for your service!
Bless you, Navy Vet!
The parents should make it know that Tezcatlipoca demands they sacrifice a School Board member and a member of the California State Board of Education weekly until he tells them to stop.
Did Muslim students object to the pagan idolatry?
The teachers who want kids to chant to Aztec gods I wonder how they feel about human sacrifice. Not talking about abortion. The Aztecs were very big on cutting open living people and pulling out their hearts while still beating.
Educators are people who don’t have children making good money teaching the children of people who do. It should not be a surprise that their priorities are different.
WTF?
This is absurd. Good for the parents.
I too am not very religious but I believe in God and His Son.
I think we need Him.
