William Shatner’s role as Captain Kirk in Star Trek is iconic and his unique style has been been the source of a number of impressions and spoofs for years. Now the man himself assesses how they’ve done. Shatner on Shatners

Vanity Fair has posted a video featuring William Shatner reviewing a number of impressions of himself, including from Seth MacFarlane, Jason Alexander, John Belushi, Jim Carrey, Bruce Campbell, and even Bill Nye “The Science Guy.” He even weighs in on Chris Pine’s SNL skit. And for the most part, he just doesn’t think he talks that way. Check it out…

Lordy, he’s 30 years older than me and I’m still not kicking him outta bed for eating crackers.

He just shines with humor and fun. Also, I’ve always liked the cut of his shoulders and his dad-bod. He’s got substance.

Amazing how only a few like him go on to new series and movies for years while others have one brief time in the spotlight and that’s it.

Bob Denver on Dobie Gillis as Maynard G. Krebs and then a TV icon as Gilligan.

Andy Griffith standup routines and comedy records (”What it Was, Was Football.”) then his own Mayberry series(249 episodes for 8 years) and Matlock popular for 10 more years.

Shatner -——
Very little known fact: In 1954, he was cast as Ranger Bob on The Canadian Howdy Doody Show.

Another: I happened onto his new record-—his 8th singing album-—mostly folk song types albums but also the blues and his Shatner Claus parody. See William Shatner’s Musical Career Wikipedia.

Wikipedia: After the cancellation of Star Trek in early 1969, Shatner experienced difficulty in finding work in the early 1970s, having become somewhat typecast from his role as Kirk. With very little money and few acting prospects, Shatner lost his home and lived in a truck-bed camper in the San Fernando Valley until small roles turned into higher-paying jobs. Shatner refers to this part of his life as “that period”, a humbling time during which he would take any odd job, including small party appearances, to support his family.

After many guest roles in series and appearances in films his TV ads became a new career.

Burns smoked between ten and fifteen cigars a day. Is that smoking “like a chimney”?

Pretty much, it is.

Chris Pine played Kirk as someone who had never been in the military. No background, no experience, no learning involved...just somehow a genius for command.

Which was stupid. Shatner’s Kirk had past failures, mentors, leaders he had looked up to while rising in rank. I think the difference was that Shatner came from a generation where most men had at least KNOWN someone in the military, while Pine probably thinks anyone in the military is a loser. In any case, the SCRIPT Pine played was “Genius Kids in Space” and it sucked.

Depends on the size of the cigar.

Sorry about this to all the Shatner fanboys but I always felt he killed his wife, but there was not enough evidence to PROVE it...

Exactly. JJ’s Captain Kirk went straight from academy student to Starship Captain without going through the ranks or acquiring any discipline. His ‘uniqueness’ as a hotheaded street scrapper was somehow enough to put him ahead of everyone else. Just stupid.

His first wife cleaned him out in '69.

I remember seeing a Shatner interview years ago where he explained that when his recitation became choppy, he was trying to remember the lines.

I was at a convention in LA and Shatner did a talk about Star Trek. Unfortunatly he showed up with a cold and about to loose his voice. One of his fans said he had a herbal concoction in his hotel room that would help keep him from losing his voice and Shatner told him that his mission now was to retrieve the herbal remedy....The guy ran off saying. I cant believe it captain Kirk is sending me on an away mission.

Love it!
I was at a small NY convention sometime in the 70's when someone hit Shatner with a pie. It was awful but he cleaned up and still came out on stage.
