Microsoft is announcing that Windows 11 will be released on October 5th. The new operating system will be available as a free upgrade for eligible Windows 10 PCs, or on new hardware that ships with Windows 11 pre-loaded.
The free upgrade to Windows 11 will start rolling out on October 5th, but like many Windows upgrades in the past, it will be available in phases. New eligible devices will be offered the upgrade first, and then Windows 11 will become available for more in-market devices in the weeks and months following October 5th.
“Following the tremendous learnings from Windows 10, we want to make sure we’re providing you with the best possible experience,” explains Aaron Woodman, general manager of Windows marketing at Microsoft. “We expect all eligible devices to be offered the free upgrade to Windows 11 by mid-2022.”
On existing Windows 10 PCs, Windows Update will let people know when the upgrade is available for Windows 11. You can also check to see if your device is eligible for the Windows 11 upgrade through Windows Update, or Microsoft’s dedicated PC Health Check app (currently in preview).

I had a laptop with Win 8.1 which I liked a lot until it died, so 2 years ago I bought a super-fast desktop with Win 10 and the Brave browser and I do like it, I only do email and read FR and other news with it, watch videos, etc.
I suppose just like when Win 10 went live in 2015 and was auto-installed with a MS update, Win 11 will automatically update Win 10 computers too?
Windows Pingy
The tremendous learnings...?
Since W10 works/worked so good.
Meaning they’ve moved beyond “Abort, Retry, Fail?”
Here we go again. Prepare to suffer.
Another upgrade to slower, less functional system that is harder to use.
cloud based?
Does this mean that my Windows 7 machine that still works fine will be even more out of date?
I hate W10; fortunately I have W7 on my laptop.
Purgatory based.
I loved Windows 7. Hated every program since.
Hmm I guess Microsoft has new and improved back doors and spyware of some sort they want installed on everyone’s computer.
LOLOL!!! 100%
And if you don't it won't start.
One thing that bugs me is: when I close down the computer it says to close the programs that are preventing the computer from shutting down but never states what those programs are.
I’m terrified. I have Office 365 on my PC and they did an update that just stripped all the files off my PC and put the on OneDrive in some place where I can only find a few of them.
I think I made the mistake of permitting the update to manage Word files.
The lost files represent years and years of work. Some of it is on an external drive, but most of it is not. I back up to Carbonite so I hope I can recover some of the data but it is incredible that the update could do this.
When the update comes, don’t give them permission to do anything. Say no and wait. And back up to an external drive.
Fingerprint and COVID vaccine detection as added security measures.
HEY NOW... that’s NOT out of the realm of possibilities
Do you have to show proof of vaccination to get it?
