Texans are leading the nation in the number of arrests for storming the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 as supporters of former President Donald Trump violently disrupted a joint session of Congress convened to certify President Joe Biden’s election.
Months later, the U.S. Department of Justice is still investigating and arresting accused rioters, including Adam Weibling, a Katy area man the FBI arrested on Tuesday. Senate Republicans pointed to these ongoing investigations as they successfully blocked a proposal to establish an independent 9/11-style, bipartisan commission into the insurrection this week.
Meanwhile, some on the right are playing down the violence of a riot that left five people dead, including a U.S. Capitol police officer, and about 140 police officers injured. U.S. Rep. Louie Gohmert, a Tyler Republican, recently gave an hour-long speech on the House floor in which he called the vast majority of those accused “peaceful Americans” whose only crime was supporting Trump. The outgoing president had urged supporters to march on the Capitol.
“If you didn’t know the TV footage was a video from January the 6th, you would actually think it was a normal tourist visit,” U.S. Rep. Andrew Clyde, a Georgia Republican, said during a recent hearing. The claim was contradicted by police accounts and video footage.
And in court documents released by the Department of Justice in the 44 cases involving Texans, vivid details have emerged about what they allegedly did that day. Some face charges for being caught on camera inside the Capitol and little else. Others are accused of wielding makeshift weapons against the police — tomahawks, chemical spray, a skateboard and a firecracker — as they fought their way into the building.
The accused Texans include military veterans running a storm search and rescue group, real estate agents, a winery owner, a lifestyle coach and a baker.
Many now face charges including disorderly conduct, obstruction of an official proceeding and entering or remaining in a restricted building or grounds. Those facing more serious charges are noted below.
Most were not identified by the Justice Department as members of right-wing groups — apparently just avid supporters of Trump who believed that the election was being stolen from him. Biden defeated Trump by more than 7 million votes in the popular vote and 306 to 232 in the electoral college.
Many were turned in to federal officials in the weeks that followed by family members, friends, coworkers and former classmates.
And Texans were there every step of the way for the insurrection.
Trump spoke at the “Save America” rally outside the White House at noon. A half-hour later as many as 15,000 people were marching toward the Capitol.
The US Marshall Service is still half legit but the rest of federal law enforcement is corrupt; spoken by retired agents that have no reason to lie.
