Faced with contentious changes within the public school sector—including the introduction of ethnic studies in some districts—some California parents are searching for alternative options.
“I don’t want my daughter exposed to any type of sex education at any grade level, and I don’t want her introduced to any type of critical race theory at any grade level,” Denise Ramirez told The Epoch Times.
Ramirez is a mother of three children, with two enrolled in the Tustin Unified School District and another recently enrolled in private school.
With concerns mounting over critical race theory (CRT) being taught in classrooms—coupled with mask mandates for public schools leading into the coming curricular year—Ramirez began to seek other options for her children.
She enrolled her daughter at a private Christian school to attend kindergarten. The facility remained open during the pandemic, and did not require kindergarteners to wear masks.
Ramirez said she wants her daughter to have an education that doesn’t involve sex education and critical race theory. She said her boys were exposed to a “comprehensive sex education” in Grade 7.
“What we want for her education to look like is that she can go in person, and there won’t be any interruption,” she said.
Increasing Private School Enrollments
At Aliso Christian Academy, principal Kaelyn Peterson said she is witnessing an increase in enrollments.
Before enrolling families into the school, Peterson provides them with a tour of the facility. Based on information she’s gleaned on the tours she’s led, parents are reaching for more in-person instruction as they see it more suitable for their kids, she said.
She also said that more conservative families are searching for alternative education options as different ideas and agendas that go against beliefs are being “pushed down” into the public education spectrum.
“The majority of them say is they want their kids in-person and they also want them in an environment where they feel like what’s being taught to them aligns with their values,” Peterson said.
The school took safety precautions during the COVID-19 pandemic, but remained open.
As some families turn toward private schools, others decide to stay put and wait for their children to finish out their public education.
Jon Schank, whose son is an incoming high school senior at Tustin Unified School District (TUSD), said that he disagrees with the decisions being made in public schools but doesn’t intend to move his son.
“I do not like the direction of education…the introduction of ethnic studies,” he told The Epoch Times.
“I think the school board does not act in the best interest of the students.”
How? I agree, but without action, nothing is going to happen.
Network with other parents and raise money to rent an abandoned building and buy school supplies. Hire other parents with a background in teaching.
Education is ripe for a total, massive overhaul. There's no need for kids to attend these indoctrination camps.
And before you FReepers scream "just homeschool!" I agree, but for most parents it's really not that easy as parents have to work. I am specifically talking about parents getting together, drawing up a contract, raising money, hiring private tutors, and having micro-schools within their neighborhoods or towns. For physical education, they can easily join local YMCAs. They can utilize libraries.
They’ll never be sorry for pulling their kids out of public schools.
The schools will deceitfully withdraw CRT but still teach it under another name.
Public schools, including the one your children or grand children are in, are child abuse. Anyone who works in a public school is aiding and abetting child abuse.
Your kids are better off just dropping out.
I wonder how much they teachers unions are pushing the delta variant as worse than leprosy?
Nope. We homeschooled all three of our kids. In fact my wife was a teacher and quit to homeschool them. Zero regrets.
My son took his kids out in their teen years.... Said it was the best decision he made in his life regarding his kids.
bump for later
Yea! Fantastic that your son did it. Good on him.
Public schools have abandoned their original charter and have become dangerous for all children.
They need to be all closed—permanently.
That may take decades but it is a goal that can and must be achieved.
Depends on the local school board and the administrators. There are sane and good principals and teachers still in the system. A lot of the edicts from the state end up being ignored in local schools.
Nobody has Time for that
I work 5 days. Wife 3. We’re busy. Bills are high.
Horse droppings. Then make time. It's not that hard to do. You got friends and family, then network and kick around some ideas around the bonfire, BBQ, and cheap beer.
COVID-19 has proved that the education system as we know it is simply obsolete and is designed for indoctrination.

Get together with others in the community. You can start up you own community schools. There are qualified teachers out there. Your children are too important.
Doesn’t matter if every single child is pulled from public schools - this very important leftist/government base will get funded regardless.
I pulled one teen from public to private last summer and one teen from public to homeschooling last Dec. I’m busy telling lots of parents in Facebook etc how to do the same. Much more interest this year—as of a week ago, when CA announced continued masking in schools and other BS. Some are fed up with masks, some with remote learning or the threat of it, some with the school boards and their obvious disdain for students and their families.
SHOULD HAVE BEEN DONE YEARS AGO.
Teachers have become a gang of THUGS.
Who cares if they get funded????
As long as they do NOT have students to corrupt.
They can destroy each other. Which would be GREAT.
