Last year, the U.S. Army began equipping its first units with the service’s new squad designated marksman rifle (SDMR) the M110A1. The use of the new SDMR will provide Army infantry squads with a very potent means of engaging targets up to 600 meters away, and is part of an effort to improve the performance of infantry weapons against effective modern body armors.
U.S. Army SDMRs, a Brief History
The use of SDMRs within U.S. Army infantry squads emerged as a result of fighting in both Iraq and Afghanistan, where it became clear that the Army’s M4 and M16 rifles struggled to cope with long-range engagements that were becoming increasingly commonplace. To compensate, the Army turned to a modified version of the M-14 rifle, a move already undertaken by U.S. Navy SEAL teams.

I like the canted pop up sights. Makes acquiring a target in the scope much easier.
Exactly my thinking.
1.5 MOA is not a “marksman” rifle.
The user is Just a squad “marksman”. not a sniper. /s
Not a coincidence. Big contracts and money gets shuffled around. Like you said, a good scope and match ammo and they're good to go. Ever watch "The Pentagon War?
A trained marksman is expected to put shots within 1.5 MOA, bench press 40 lbs, do 3 pushups, and run the 8 minute mile. Standards!

But, of course, there are waivers available on request.
D’ya think I could get a CCW for this one in California? I suspect I probably cannot (but it would be fun to submit the application to Leftland; I mean, Sacramento ...)
I’d like to see this go head-to-head with an out-of-the-box AR-10 and an EBR already in inventory.
“It’s the US Army. They train their troops to have a basic grasp of which end the projectile comes out of and call it good enough.
Semper Fi.”
LOL. During Basic Training at MCRD San Diego I was required to hit a man sized target at 600 yards with a rack grade M16-A1. I shot Expert pretty much right out of the gate.
Semper Fi.

We already had a rifle 40 years ago that had a battle-efective range of 600 meters. It was a 20” barrel M16 shooting M855 ammo. It could penetrate steel helmets at 600 meters.
Before that, we had the M14. Battle effective range to 1,000 meters and beyond with M118LR ammo.
I have the equivalent of both. I shoot them regularly.
We used a modified M-14, the XM-21, as a sniper rifle in Viet Nam. 7.62 has great stopping power and accuracy. But with the silencer and scope, especially the starlite scope, that sucker was heavy as hell.
What's the big deal with firing close groups at 600 yards with a scoped rifle? Gyrenes qualification in the 60's was accomplished with rifle range qualifications requirement firing prone at 500 yard silhouette targets using the iron peeps with an M14.
1.5 MOA gets you in about a 3" circle at 200 meters. That's about half the MOA of an M-14. It's clearly not a sniper rifle, and true snipers will be using something different. This looks to be just for one guy in each squad.
Seems reasonable to me for that purpose.
Knight’s Armament is basically producing an H&K MR308/MR762/ HK417 with a suppressor and a scope.
600 meters!! whoa!
heh.
If I made a load like that and my rifle shot like that, I’d get rid of the piece of garbage. My rifles shoot 1/2 and 1/4 MOA or they don’t stay.
The MOA of an M-4 or M-16 series is about 4. Again, this isn't a sniper rifle, but it is still significantly more accurate than the rifles that are currently standard issue.
This thread is like dudes talking about having 8 hours to complete 50 mile marches carrying 200 pounds of gear.
You’re a funny marine. I actually like the marines, it’s the seals which are the joke.
The army spits out Rangers and Delta on that end, and those lads are far superior.
Afghanistan was the test, and the seals failed my unit not once, but twice, leaving us for dead. Longer story, but we all detest them. Delta on the other hand, we’d stand in the way of flying metal for them, and they would for us.
TK for short ?
Could have saved even more money (and American lives in Vietnam) if they had originally adopted the AR-10 back in the '50s.
Hey, where’s the magazine?
