Sometime after 4:30 PM EDT on June 20, I heard a lot of thunder outside here in Broward County. When I opened my door to check I was somewhat surprised. Not by the rain clouds above but by the fact that the air felt very dry and warm. This is unusual in that we don't normally feel dry air here in South Florida where humid is the norm. Also of interest was that the wind was quite high gusting up to about 40 mph. When warm dry air rushes up against rain clouds the result is a lot of electricity in the air and that is exactly what happened as you can see in this video.
My recordings were between approximately 4:40 PM and 5:00 PM.
BTW, the temperature drop during the first few minutes must have been at least 10 degrees.
PING!
Well....if that qualifies as intense...the lightning storms in texas or new mexico should qualify as apocalyptic. I found that video relaxing personally. Thanks for the upload.
All I can say is “Oh wow”.
No value judgement intended here: Anyone you know urging you to get inside rather than follow your fascination with mother nature’s wrath?
That would have happened but my wife was visiting her sister in Miami yesterday.
Here's what we get in Wisconsin:
Knew it!
Nine major lightning strikes on camera in the space of about 15 minutes plus for every lightning strike you saw, there were at least 4 or 5 lightning strikes off camera making for a minimum of about 50 lightning strikes (plus heat lightning sparking every few seconds in the clouds) in that period so I would say yeah, it was intense. Also if you listen to the background roars of thunder in the video it was almost continuous.
The next time you see a lightning storm like that in New Mexico or Texas, then break out your camera and SHOW us if it matches what you see in this video.
Many years ago we had a derechio go through CNY and the lightning looked like a strobe light for about 45 mins and it was constant thunder.
It knocked the power out instantly and resulted in a LOT of tree damage and some loss of life.
It’s not something you forget when a storm slams into the house and shakes the house and then rains in all the windows at once, on all four sides.
New York City?
Got a bit nasty here.
That is similar to Arizona Monsoon season.
Hmmm
I saw a great storm once over the delaware bay at the east end of cape may(the cove). We got no rain as the storm was mostly over delaware. but it was spectacular and i did not have a tripod for my camera. I carried the tripod with me for years after. Huge horizontal and vertical strickes.
We had a derecho in 2012. I noticed the strobe light lightning and got up to watch. Went from dead calm sultry night to a hurricane in 90 seconds. Didn’t loose power initially, but it was turned off the next afternoon as they worked on the lines. Came back a week later.
You want intense lightning? OKAY, I'LL GIVE YOU INTENSE LIGHTNING!!! And none of that lame lightning strike ever 3-7 seconds. How about SEVERAL LIGHTNING STRIKES PER SECOND? And not only that this storm in Broward County in 2019 lasted for OVER FOUR HOURS!!! Here is just a few minutes of it. Oh, and this is presented in real time, NOT speeded up.
I got caught in one of those just north of Fort Collins, Colorado. Frankly, it is the only electrical storm I've experienced that wasn't fun. Too much of a good thing. I was heading south form Cheyenne and around 11 pm when the skies opened up with a bibilical rain. After I saw a Colorado State Patrol officer pull off the interstate, I realized I had no business driving myself. Pulled off and parked. Then the electrical storm started.
I was in a small convertible sports car with a low roof, so I couldn't see much of the lightning. Every five seconds or so, there was a flash of light and a rumble of distant thunder. Every minute or so, I was assaulted with a flash of blinding light surrounding my sports car, like something out of "Close Encounters ofthe Third Kinds".
It was fun. For about 5 minutes. After about 15 minutes, I was tired of having a bolt of lighting blare directly overhead with an immediate defeaning thunderclap every minute. Meanwhile, like I said, there was a minor flash every 5 seconds or so.
It was a slow moving storm and I was trapped on this side street off the interstate for 2 hours solid while the monsoon rain poured and the lightening kept its ungodly pace and intensity. Maybe it tapered off after an hour and a half. I don't remember.
All I know is, it is the only thundestorm I have ever been caught in that wasn't fun. Way too loud, way too close, and the worst thing was being in a tiny car with a low roof -- I just couldn't see a thing. Just my entire world went blinding white every minute or so, with minor flashes every 5 seconds.
I don't ever want to go through that again. What the OP experinced, yes that is great fun and I love those electrical storms. Good times and fun.
Years ago, I flew over Orlando when it was under a severe lightning storm. I saw more lightning in that 15 minutes than I had seen in Oregon in my entire life.
North of Syracuse.
Central NY. CNY
