Fox News’ The Five just lost a major personality. Juan Williams, who was one of the longest-serving hosts on the show, having been there seven years, will be leaving the show immediately.
Williams announced his departure from the show today, noting that it would be his last show.
Here was his comment per Deadline.
“This is my last day hosting The Five,” Williams said on the show. “Covid taught me a lot of lessons. As the show goes back to the New York studio, I will be staying in D.C. I will be working for Fox out of Washington. My work as a Fox News political analyst will continue.”
But if you think this is a sign that Fox News is waking up to the needs of its viewers, that’s apparently not the motivation here. Williams is leaving due to the fact that the show is returning to the studio in New York. That would require him to go back to commuting from Washington D.C. to the Fox News headquarters. His mention of COVID is odd, as such a commute wouldn’t put him at risk for the disease given he’s been vaccinated so I’d suppose Williams’ age has more to do with this than anything.
He will still be doing political analysis on the network, something I’m not a fan of. After all, he’s the author of hits like why didn’t the cop just shoot in the air and those teens who murdered the Uber Eats driver were just out for a joy ride.
Williams is a lot like Geraldo Rivera in that I simply don’t see the point. Neither offer thoughtful analysis, both clearly being past their prime. They also represent viewpoints that are toxic to the vast majority of the viewership of Fox News. It’d be one thing if they were liberals with a quick wit and a great ability to debate, but they aren’t. I don’t see the value-add. With that said, Williams at least seems like a genuinely nice guy.
As to The Five’s future plans, they’ll be looking for another left-winger to stick in the seat. I suppose that makes Fox News unique compared to MSNBC and CNN, both networks that wouldn’t be caught dead giving a conservative a permanent spot on a major show.
Regardless, I expect The Five to keep dominating in their time slot.
Good riddance to bad rubbish. Not that I ever watched that show.
They'll have temp fill ins until Nov 2022. After that Liz Cheney will be out of a job and they will offer it to her.
Good riddance, Juan! I’d been muting him whenever it was his turn to opine anyway. He was a poor choice from the start and I doubt anyone will want to watch him on any other program either.
BINGO!
Let’s remember how Juan got the job to begin with. He was fired from left-wing tax-supported NPR for saying something halfway conservative (i think it had to do with black gun ownership) and Fox swooped in and signed him to give their newsroom some street cred.
His career then became as liberal punching bag to conservative opinionaters, much in the same way CNN used to use Robert Novak. His job was to say something absurd so the conservatives could gang up on him and beat him to a figurative pulp.
It’s Conflict 101, straight from the old “Crossfire” show where you get at least two people who are set up by the producers to argue opposite positions for the ratings. You wonder after awhile if they really mean half the crap they say.
Sure, so Fox will have a place ready for Aaron Rodgers when he retires.
Question: Other than being black and Democratic, what does Juan Williams have in common with Susan Rice?
Answer: Both have sons in their early 20’s who call themselves conservatives.
John David Rice Cameron supported Trump and was beaten up at his college for expressing support for Brett Kavanaugh.
Raffi Williams gets along with his Dad, but considers his own views as far more conservative.
They need a lib for “balance,” but if they want a new black host, they should hire Candace Owens.
I know — bring back Beckel! </sarc>
He’d have to get a sex change to get a full-time big on The View but he might consider it.
Maybe Bob Beckel would agree to retire...
On its face, I’m gonna call that RAYCISS!
As long as they keep Katie Pavlich, I’m happy
Harold Ford, Jr. although I don’t think he’ll push the Dems talking point memos as well as Juan. He is at least reasonable.
Dig up Bob Beckel
“You wonder after awhile if they really mean half the crap they say.”
Precisely that!
He is Paid good money to represent the opposing viewpoint on that show. Otherwise it’s a conservative echo chamber full of confirmation bias. It would be a really boring show if all we had was a bunch of people agreeing with each other and nobody to push back against. Liberal Punching bag indeed. He was there for gutfeld and waters to beat up every show. I can’t remember a single time watching that show where I agreed with any of his points of view. But I liked him because he was able to do that job of being the contrarian and still maintain a good relationship with his peers.
He did a good job and I hope he finds a good path, long life and many happy days in the future.
As long as the show features Dana and Katie I’m good…
Bout time.. He’s a useless liberal idiot that is on the wrong side of everything just like Biden.
Harold Ford Jr. is far from reasonable. He is from a corrupt political family in Memphis and couldn’t be farther left. He should be in prison instead of television.
