They really have no idea.
My M1 Garand is an actual military assault rifle and fires a much larger round (.30-06) than an AR-15 and they have no issues with them.
Utterly clueless.

I think that may be one of the reasons that they want he AR. It’s kind of a cap gun. Then they go for more powerful weapons, simply because they’re “X times more powerful than the AR-15.“ Rest assured that if the Garand isn’t in the first go-round, it’ll be in the second one. The SKS, too. They were, after all, as-issued infantry weapons.
The restrictions on barrel length result in the M-forgeries having more muzzle energy than the M-4s issued to our troops.
