10-month-old baby killed in attack by family's 2 Rottweilers: Police
ABC News ^ | 5/26/2021 | Jon Haworth

A 10-month-old baby has been killed after being attacked by the family’s two Rottweilers while the child’s father left them unattended for just a few moments to do a quick chore.

After a brief investigation, Johnson said the father, who is a law enforcement officer, had briefly left the baby unattended in the home to go outside and move a sprinkler in the yard.

“He just stepped outside to move a sprinkler and the neighbour pulled up talking to him, and not even a couple of minutes passed and he heard the commotion inside the house,” said Johnson.

We were blessed to always have dogs as pets growing up, mostly muts but research on this breed shows: Research shows.

Rottweilers, over the last fifteen years, are responsible for the second highest number of serious dog attacks in the country (See Dog Bite Study). The number of serious injuries caused by this breed is highly disproportionate to the number of Rottweilers in the United States.  Over a twelve-year period, Rottweilers were responsible for over 10% of fatal dog attacks even though they are less than 3% of the total dog population. Pit bulls have more notoriety for being aggressive because they are responsible for more serious and fatal injures of humans than any breed.  However, there are also twice as many Pit bulls as Rottweilers, so statistically speaking, there should be more attacks by Pit bulls than Rottweilers.

When calculating the number of reported bites per breed, Rottweilers are approximately ten times more likely to kill or mangle someone than the average dog. They also are more likely to kill other animals than the average dog. - https://www.oharaattorney.com/news/rottweilers-are-extremely-dangerous-breed/

Back in 1997, there were reports that over the past years, the Rottweiler was responsible for 29 deaths. According to the reports of the Centers for Disease Control, this is the second highest fatality count for any dog breed. With these grimacing facts, it would not be surprising why there are many people who would be alarmed by this.

Here’s the truth about Rottweilers and what every pet owner needs to know when they are interested in adding this dog to their brood.

One reason why the Rottweiler is known to be a violent dog is because of its history. This dog used to guard the cattle for the Roman soldiers and they accompanied the army. These dogs were prized since cattle happen to be the main source of nutrition for the army. This is also the dog breed which is used to bring the cattle to the market.

Later on, Rottweilers were the dogs that helped the butchers in pulling their cart. Police officers also brought Rottweilers to help them with their job. This dog is considered as a guardian and one of the best family friends.

By nature, the Rottweiler is territorial and this is one of the reasons why it can be a good guard dog. These dogs can be extremely protective of the things that they hold dear. When these dogs are not trained properly, they can give in to their domineering nature. In fact, this is the main reason why there are some Rottweilers are involved in attacks. - https://cuddleyourdogs.com/why-rottweilers-are-dangerous/

That poor baby. On a guilt scale of 1 to 10, that father is at a 10. Hopefully he can deal with it in a positive way.

When I lived in Winston-Salem, a jogger was mauled to death by two Rotts.

I don’t understand the attraction of having large, dangerous animals since there are so many other options.

A friend used to work at animal control, in Amarillo. He said black guys were always coming in, looking for “Rockweillers.”

If you’ve got time to spend with them, they’re great. I wouldn’t want one that was kept in the house and yard all day. Too much pent up energy.

Speciesist! They were just trying to turn their lives around!

Beautiful dogs and wouldn’t choose any other for guarding the perimeter. We had a female German Rott years ago that lived to be 15 raised from a pup. She was one of the most loyal dogs we’ve owned. Downside is they must have plenty of room to “roam” or they will “escape”.

She and the local animal control officer became quite close as she would ‘escape” the yard and roam the neighborhood releasing other dogs from their “cells”. Animal control would earn his keep rounding up “the convicts” and bring the ringleader back home in the back of the truck. Got to the point where he’d call her to the truck by name and she’d hop in the cab with him enjoying the AC. One time he tried to drop her off at the house and she refused to get out of the truck cause she was liking the AC so he drove around for a while with his “passenger” until she was ready to go home.

I sure miss Grace.

I see so many people posting pictures of these huge dogs with babies as if they’re best friends and I am always scared when I see this because I think it’s dangerous. Obviously it is. How irresponsible to even have a huge dog like that if you have a baby in the house.
Animals are animals these are big huge mean animals. The guy probably feels really bad because it says fault in my opinion.

My mom and sister offered to watch my baby daughter for a couple of hours. My wife and I took her over and the dog I grew up with showed a lot of interest in the youngster. When we got back, my mother and sister were sitting in the living room. They were afraid to move. They told me that whenever they started to walk toward the playpen, the dog growled at them. He was guarding the youngster. Now that we were there, he was okay with them again. Any dog that attacks a child should be gotten rid of.

I would bet 10-1 when the dad went outside, the child started crying. Cry or squealing is like a light switch to many breeds to attack, and if two or more dogs, all to attack. A few months back a lady was taking her dogs for a walk, they attacked and killed her. I bet she slipped and fell and when she did she squealed, Setting off both dogs to attack. In a feral dog pack if there is a fight and one dog squeals in pain, the others will attack the one that squealed.

I’m pretty much ambivalent on dog breeds per se. I wish they would do a study on the owners. 90% of pit bulls bad rap can be directly attributed to their asswhole owners. Probably higher. Same with Rotties.

The father has earned the obligation of feeling guilty for the rest of his life.

Did you read the hidden statement?

First, he was just out doing a quick chore on the yard...moving the sprinkler....

THEN the drop statement: He was talking with someone who had driven up.

I am willing to say it was A FREAKING LOT MORE than a few minutes.
