They're keeping their masks on. Their reasons extend beyond their health.

When federal health officials recently announced that fully vaccinated people no longer have to wear masks in most situations, Jaz Johnson was among those who kept hers on.

Johnson, 46, of Kansas City, Missouri, has received both doses of the Covid-19 vaccine, but she has no desire to go maskless.

In addition to helping keep her and her family healthy, masks have offered Johnson something else: the chance to hide emotions, such as contempt when someone is standing too close to her in a checkout line, or boredom when a relative tells the same story for the tenth time.

“I am one of those people that cannot lie or get away with anything,” Johnson, who works in information technology, said. “It’s been pretty fun now that no one really knows, necessarily, what I’m thinking.”

some people are continuing to do so — having come to appreciate the reprieve they provide from stifling social expectations while out in public.

These mask-wearers say they see a multitude of benefits to covering up. No one can tell you to smile when you don’t feel like it. It gives you a break from putting on makeup. And it provides a degree of anonymity.

“It’s exhausting having to put on this smiling, very calm, brave face,” said Cassidy, 35, of Lake Tahoe, Nevada, who asked to be identified by first name only for privacy.

A Navy veteran, Cassidy has been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder and agoraphobia and said masks feel like a “shield” that prevent uncomfortable interactions while running errands: “I can absorb the environment in a much more controlled manner without having to think about what my face is doing, and having to think about someone seeing my face.”

Good points. I still tend to cut some slack. I know a human when I see one, even if masked.

This was a pathetic piece of “journalism”.

“Today a Karen gave me a mask with tongs. I started laughing.”
*************************************************
That is pretty funny. How were the tongs attached to the mask?

I’m also in that situation; it’s been a royal P.I.T.A. to communicate with people.

How do the businesses know whether or not an unmasked person has had the shots?

No, its on the honor system. I have a pic of my card, but I don’t think anyone will ask because its probably illegal to do so. Thats the places that let you be maskless. The ones that are locking down more than the lockdowns, who can say since they often won’t even let you through the door unless you have an appointment.

I do know that if infections start going up again everyone will have to wear masks again.

I’ve detected smiles from the masked on occasion.

And I've caused a few too. At times when I encounter someone wearing a big bandana I'll go "so, where's the train robbery at?" or "robbing the stagecoach today, eh?". Got laughs every time.

Good point about asking for verification of vaccine card. It should be illegal, but so much going on today is already unlawful by the Constitution. I don’t have faith in anyone, including the Courts, to hold up our rights any longer.

And all those issues are huge serious psychological ramifications to mask wearing. Masks contribute to the breakdown of society and culture.

Feeling unconstrained from social norms is very dangerous.

I agree, to a point.

We can’t kept denying the negative psycho-social effects of mass mask-wearing by the public in public

Society gradually crumbled and people continued to get sick at the same or greater rates. It is sad that some people think mask wearing is ok even with no health benefit. Anything that dehumanizes is not without consequences. Add the virtue signaling as one more societal harm.

All women like men’s attention to varying levels, your hyperbole aside.

you are implying that women are sad once they have lost their looks or have gained weight, because men don’t eyeball them anymore.
I know alot of women in that category, and they don’t miss it.
Now YMMV, maybe you do.

LOL sure they don’t miss it. That’s why there are so many unhappy both young and middle aged women popping 3 to 10 pills a day.

wait up- your original comment implied older women, who once had mens eyes but have lost it thru aging, not young stupid girls.
you must be a man! I don’t agree with you- but i am not here to change your mind. Have a good weekend.

I said all women (obviously an exaggeration but vast majroity, which would include “older” but certainly 20-50 in that group. You can see this in the elderly as well in the massive retirement communities all of the country, with the Villages, FL being the poster child (and also the STD capital of the country) but there are dozens of such communities in every large city in the US and a handful in every medium size city. My last neighborhood was right beside one of these 55+ communities and everyone jokingly calls it “sin city” instead of “sun city”
