The dust has settled and the evidence is in: The 1960s Great Society and War on Poverty programs of President Lyndon Baines Johnson (LBJ) have been a colossal and giant failure. One might make the argument that social welfare programs are the moral path for a modern government. They cannot, however, make the argument that these are in any way effective at alleviating poverty.
In fact, there is evidence that such aggressive programs might make generational poverty worse. While the notion of a “culture of dependence” is a bit of a cliché in conservative circles, there is evidence that this is indeed the case – that, consciously or not, the welfare state creates a culture where people receive benefits rather than seeking gainful employment or business ownership.
This is not a moral or even a value judgment against the people engaged in such a culture. Again, the claim is not that people “choose to be on welfare,” but simply that social welfare programs incentivize poverty, which has an impact on communities that has nothing to do with individual intent.
We are now over 50 years into the development of the Great Society and the War on Poverty. It is time to take stock in these programs from an objective and evidence-based perspective. When one does that, it is not only clear that the programs have been a failure, but also that they have disproportionately impacted the black community in the United States. The current state of dysfunction in the black community (astronomically high crime rates, very low rates of home ownership and single motherhood as the norm) are not the natural state of the black community in the United States, but closely tied to the role that social welfare programs play.

LBJ’s “Great Society” was a disaster.
In a handful of years Black inner city mothers will be thrilled and amazed that their kids are learning and are earning an exit to the socioeconomic jail inner city failed education provides."
Well-written post but IMHO that door literally shut when Bubba took office, and now you don't have the talent pool to make that happen, starting with the teachers, much less the students you'd get.
And, for all the misery democrats brought to citizens of this country - it also costs all of us billions of dollars... and destroy black culture that had survived through the horrors of slavery and Jim Crow...
I'm amazed people vote democrat...

Beat me to it!
LBJ is the root cause for the decimation of the black family unit in the US. The fact that the welfare $$ trickled down through the maternal line with financial disincentives to keep the nuclear family intact. He knew EXACTLY what he was doing and the rest of the sycophant DemonRats went right along. Generations of welfare recipients know no other way than dependence on the the feds for their sustenance.
It's a form of slavery, money but no work and no advancement.
“Black Rednecks and White Liberals”
Written by Thomas Sowell is a book well worth reading if you want real insight on the issues created by Lying Lyndon.
He reveals how much damage was really done.
PS: Thomas Sowell is a world renowned black economist and has written for years and his writings are well worth studying.
—and that rabid right-winger (sarc) Daniel Patrick Moynihan predicted exactly what would happen—
This is a canard
Great Society made it worse no question
But black culture and families in America already had problems compared to whites
Sorry
More talk radio lies meant to fit their narrative
The ignorant here are going to believe what they must
But a couple of things kill me
GOPe and NeoCons crow about how they pushed 60s civil rights etc legislation in spite of Dixiecrats and GOP righties
And then blame that ...lol
And this smacks of white paternalism and soft bigotry since blacks rise and fall on white actions
I’m about truth
Not being loved here
Btw
Have u met humblegunner ..lol
Warning: rant
Inadvertently? Maybe.
Not long ago someone posted a thread where monkeys were given unequal reward for the same task. One got grates and the other got cucumber.
This was from a TED talk.
In the thread I suggested to repeat the experiment to see what happened when both were given grapes but only one had to perform the task to get it.
There are to this very day more white people on welfare than black people on welfare ... and single parent households are rising among whites too ... but the difference as I see it isn’t the welfare aspect but the race grievance hustling aspect when combined with some other stuff.
Something seems to have changed when a relative few (out of all black persons) angry radicalized black people started burning down black communities in the very late 60’s and early 70’s. This was decades after the last time an angry mob of white Democrats had last burned down a black community.
Until those outbursts of utter stupid the black family in America had remained resilient, but with them, and also all the other radical crap the radicals brought with them from race hustling, socialist ideology and the sexual revolution, dry rot spread everywhere and welfare, though it could not shield black people from all this Looney Leftwing nitwittery it could help draw more black people into the Looney Leftwing nitwittery.
Think on the difference between opposition coming from without and decay coming from within.
And that’s what has destroyed black communities as much as they’ve been destroyed, a spicy blend of race baiting victimology, socialist ideology, entitlement all aiding and abetting a still small but growingly hyperviolent sub-demographic of habitual criminals who seem to make a point of preying on other black people and who commit virtually all crime in black communities, cause almost all the damage to black communities, and terrorize their neighbors like it was their life’s work to do so.
To be blunt: the “black community” is being ravaged by a bunch of dumb****s ... notably (but not entirely) the gang bangers who are like millstones hung from beneath Black America’s wings ... oh, and also the idiots rioting and looting, destroying often black owned businesses, but at any rate places they and their neighbors depend on to give them jobs or places to shop or eat at.
And in the midst of that, there’s a lot of black people who quite reasonably would kinda like their communities to be safe and prosperous ... which they would be more (sometimes much more) of if it weren’t for the nitwits.

See?
Often times here at Free Republic we have discussions about the worst president ever. I don’t know why, but I get so pissed off when morons ignore LBJ and go for other morons who were less evil like Jimmy Carter.
I still to this day maintain that Lyndon Baines Johnson is and was the worst president ever. Even worse than Barack Obama. Although over time, Obama‘s policies may continue to be so disastrous that he will overtake Johnson as the worst ever. But LBJ‘s policies are still harming America some 50 years after they were elected.
I would argue that black families and the black community today are worse off than they ever were during the Jim Crow era.
That’s a radical concept to wrap your head around, but clearly looking at Chicago, looking at BLM, looking at the hatred and racism on going in the black communities, looking at the deliberate racial actions LBJ took all those years ago and looking at how Democrats continue their hateful and racist policies against blacks, can you really tell me blacks are better off than they were 75 years ago?
LBJ was likely the worst President in American history, even passing James Buchanan. We will never overcome his policies and destruction of society.
You need a gun magazine to point out the problem with black families?
That is freedom
When U quit caring about racism as original sin of the white race
That is key for any free thinker
We’re u born in 1934?
My daddy was too
I rank them in the following descending order of worstness:
1.) FDR
2.) LBJ
3.) Obama
4.) Biden
