Party leaders from across the state, looking to avoid a potential civil war, have been rallying around Rep. Lee Zeldin of Long Island — a Donald Trump-loving conservative who voted to overturn the results of the 2020 election and has fought ardently to oppose abortion rights. Other contenders look much the same and include upstate firebrand Rep. Elise Stefanik and former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani’s son, Andrew Giuliani. Both are also backers of Trump, who lost the state by some 2 million votes last year.
The dynamics are not the result of choice or strategy but rather environment. The GOP is nearly decimated across the state, and with a polarized landscape on the heels of a Trump presidency, it might be impossible to find a GOP candidate who can appeal to center-right Democrats and independents — especially one who has the kind of financing and zeal Zeldin does.
The next George Pataki simply doesn't exist.

Rudy's son Andy sounds intriguing. I'll bet you a Trump-loving candidate will strike a responsive chord, even in the City, part of which Donald built, and the better part of which he embodies.
Politico doing a bit of concern trolling about the GOP in New York?
I’m comfortable with either Zeldin or Stefanik, but I know almost nothing about Giuliani. One thing seemingly for sure, Cuomo is burnt toast.
Lawsy, no moderates around. I guess we’ll have to throw you in the briar patch with all those extremists.
Thank God
Yep, either will do.
This should be in breaking news, the GOP has a party in NY? Who knew.
Cuomo is playing the game like Ralph Northam. He’s not going anywhere for now. I placed my bet he will survive until 2022 primary.
NYS GOP is an acronymic oxymoron.
NYS is screwed.
Just get out while you can.
Hope you’re wrong about NYS. I left NY decades ago, but it never left me. It’s in how I cross the street against the light, keep pushing against bureaucracies, writing poetry, and of course in my accent in unguarded moments. It’s the home of Rudy Giuliani, the Trumps, Chabad, and magnificent skyscrapers and bridges, some of the best libraries in America, and knishes. The socialists have done their best to gang rape NY into submission, but I prefer to think that it didn’t take.
Florida is more my kind of politics, but I hated every minute of existence there. Even so, I am not coming back to NY. If I’d ever go back to the US, I’d go back to Savannah or Atlanta.
As a resident of NYS I’ll be shocked if Cuomo isn’t reelected
That’s how bad it is here.
I love NYC’s museums, but they’re in NYC, so I haven’t visited in years.
That’s okay, though, considering museums are going woke, too. I don’t need a museum fiz as much as I used to do.
You do know that Zabars does mail order...? :-)
What makes you think NYS’s elections aren’t rigged?
Never visited museums when I lived there. Went to New Years Eve in Times Square once, and hated it. Crowds. Yuch. Fireworks after 9/11 are not welcome up close. I want to know if there’s a lethal explosion.
My first visit to NYC, many, many moons ago included coming upon cops discovering a homicide and our hotel room being burgled during our stay.
That was my intro to NYC.
We actually enjoyed going while Giuliani was mayor. The city was...enjoyable.
We’ve only been once since.
We won’t go back any time soon.
Of course they are. Its possible to beat a rigged election, by exceeding their margin of fraud. That’s what happened in 2000. Cubans pissed off over Elian outnumbered dead people still on the roles by a very narrow margin. In 2020, they didn’t take any chances, and flooded the battleground states’ corrupt urban machines with enough votes to counter any landslide. The fraud margin was unnaturally high, causing ridiculous turnout numbers, etc. Now all the gas lighting in the world can’t convince me that it was legit. In fact, the more they protest, the lest persuasive they become.
DeBlasio has done wonders. Make the Empire City Horrible Again. MECHA.
Did you notice the turnout numbers for NYC’s last mayoral election?
The fig was outrageously low. The Kaiser won handily.
That turnout figure should have triggered an audit.
If we were that saturated with lefties they wouldn’t need to rig elections.
Period.
But that makes a handy excuse for never doing an audit.
