Did you think coughing or sneezing in public was a social non-no before the pandemic? A new study finds people are even more mortified to do it now. Over half of Americans say they feel judged when they have to sneeze in public, even when they’re masking up.
The survey polled 2,000 Americans to understand how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted social etiquette around coughing and sneezing, especially as allergy season approaches. Over half the poll (56%) feel the heat of judgmental eyes after sneezing or coughing. Another 55 percent shared they experience a slight moment of panic when they feel the urge to sneeze coming on.
The survey, conducted by OnePoll on behalf of Flonase, also reveals at the top thoughts that pop into Americans’ heads when they’re fighting a sneeze or cough. Some of the top thoughts among respondents include: “Great, now people think I’m sick,” “I promise I’m NOT sick,” and “Hold it in!”....
No matter how you sneeze, 46 percent of respondents said they’re dreading the upcoming allergy season because of the additional stress they’re experiencing due to the pandemic. As a result, 27 percent of seasonal allergy sufferers worry their allergies will jump up a notch due to the past year’s quarantine....

Superspreader event. Walk away.
I enjoy holding a cat in front of my face when sneezing. Take that.
That’s why Kommie Harris won’t hold a press conference. She hates that term
As long as nobody sneezes in my face or flicks a buger on my who gives a chit.
I like to start coughing, just to see the Karens and Chads shuffle away. It’s mean, but you gotta entertain yourself sometimes when waiting in a queue.
It’s allergy season. People are going to sneeze. Anyone who advocates sneezing with a mask on is more than a moron.
I also just got done with bronchitis. Coughing is a way of life for several weeks.
When I cough, I follow it up with “It’s just bronchitis, deal with it.”
New pick-up line:
Hey baby, can I cough into your elbow?
I’m ok reminding people about covering for a sneeze. Not Sorry, it’s been good manners for a reason.
thats not her elbow
Karens are so judgey!
You are.
It's not acceptable to be in a store and coughing now.
I fake cough just to smoke out the democrats.😃
Me too. I have seasonal allergies, but year round. Each season it’s a different allergen for me. I have been asked not to come to certain get togethers because I occasionally sneeze, even though I instinctively cover my mouth and turn away from others. Rarely has it been a problem until CoVid. I’ve had to adjust what friendship means now.
It won’t be just Democrats you’re smoking out. Haven’t you noticed how many Karens there are right here on FR? One of my closest friends is a staunch Republican and Trump supporter, yet she has fallen hook, line, and sinker for every piece of CoVid nonsense, and I cannot talk her out of it.
People should have always been covering up when coughing or sneezing.
It's also fun to see them try to stop tripping over their own feet in their hurry to run from your unmasked presence when they turn the corner in a store aisle and come across you.
It’s still ok to fart!
Wait, what?
The article is not saying people should not cover their mouth or that people they surveyed think they do not need to cover their mouth. The first part of the title was a poor editorial choice, IMHO.
The survey found that people feel they are being judged and thought to have COVID when they cough and sneeze like they do at the same time every year because they are allergic to something.
What passes for journalism today.....
Sheesh.
I have encountered that reaction, too of people backing off if I cough or sneeze.
