Why Do I Know Nothing About the Soviet Union?
Chosen by Choice ^ | 25 Mar 2021 | Nellie Bowles

Growing up at nice lefty, wildly expensive private schools, I learned history as a series of progressive triumphs over conservative intolerance.

It made me happy to know that was how the world unfolded. It made me happy to know I’d be on the righteous side. It made me happy to know that the good team would win out. Each day is better than the last, and the path forward is always clear.

Religious schooling does not impart that message. It can’t. The Bible’s myths are all about chaos and complexity, sin and redemption, destruction and forgiveness, cowardice and courage, idiocy, luck.

To instill blissful confidence in me, the educational system had to downplay or ignore leftist failure. Secular, liberal Americans like me are taught a very beautiful and simple myth. It goes a little like: every progressive program that has failed or caused suffering didn’t do so because of some flaw in the plan or some misunderstanding of human nature. It failed because of forces on the wrong side of history.

This is how the system popped me out, at 22 years old, with only the vaguest knowledge of why the Soviet Union was a disaster. I had absolutely zero awareness that Jews there had any issue at all. If any of this was taught, it was fast and light enough to scuttle across my mind without leaving a mark.

My ignorance hit me hard in my Jewish 101 class, where one student was the daughter of Russian Jews, but she knew very little about Judaism from her family. I had no idea Judaism has been illegal there, that the rituals and the community had been pressured for generations to erase all traces of religiosity, all traces of difference, any part of themselves that might be Jewish....

Actually heard a demented progressive history teacher once state that the inherent goodness and kindness of Stalin was manifested in how kind he was to the Germans and German lands he got his hands on after and during the war. After all the Germans had devasted Russia, killed millions and caused incredible suffering. Yet he let them live and return to their homes in a new socialist paradise. The progressives actually think and rationalize in such a manner. These are the people teaching young Americans history.

There’s an old joke about the USSR and Jews.

In it Brezhnev asks an adviser how many Jews there are in Soviet Union.

“I believe the official number is 5 million.”

“How many would leave if we allowed the to emigrate?” Leonid then asked.

After a moment of obvious mental calculation the advisor said: “Maybe as many as 20 million.”

she doesn’t know anything because...

she is a freakin lib, educated at Columbia, her partner is Bari Weiss, whom she has been dating since 2019.

Bari Weiss is an American opinion writer and editor. In 2017, Weiss joined The New York Times as a staff editor in the Opinion section. She resigned from The New York Times on July 13th, 2020, blasting the institution on her way out in a vitriolic letter explaining why she chose to leave her job.

The worst dereliction is the fact that Naziism is taught as a RIGHT-WING ideology, instead of a SOCIALIST left-wing atrocity.

The answer to the question posed by the title is that the history of the Soviet experiment in Russia is an embarrassment to the Left. They can of course accurately point out that Russians have been perpetually cursed with autocratic, and at times murderous, governance. Some kind of heavy hand seems to be required to effectively run the place. And most Russians even seem to crave it. Marxism simply gave it the veneer of "science" and the illusion of leading somewhere. And by discarding those elements which had lent some decency to pre-Soviet life, especially the church and Christian morality, it made the tyranny brutally efficient and unquestioned.

Anti-Semitism was always a part of the Russian landscape. As it was, with a few exceptions, throughout Europe. In Soviet times it had a double edge because of the identification of non-religious Jewish intellectuals with Bolshevism and Marxism. Hitler even portrayed the Soviet Union as a Jewish construct. Outright pogroms might have been a thing of the past, but that didn't prevent the Communists from leaning on the old prejudice when it suited them.

What should be harder for today's true believers to explain, having occupied, purged, and taken full control of the Democratic Party, are Cuba, Venezuela, and the decline of America's great cities and greatest State into hellholes under the operating principles of Marx, Lenin, Stalin, Mao, Castro, and Chavez. But they're shielded from any such questions by a media owned and operated by their co-religionists. Pravda in its heyday may have carried more "truth" than what runs through America's newsrooms today. So teach kids the history of the Soviet Union? Good luck getting that past the teachers' unions, faculty lounge, or the editors of the NY Times.

One day Secretary General Brezhnev was taking a train to Minsk.

Half way there the train broke down. The chief engineer contacted the ranking rail official on the train and suggested that they send someone up the line to have a new engine sent back.

The official then suggested to the chief political officer on the train to review the chief engineer’s report for incompetence or sabotage as to why the train had stopped.

The political officer then suggested to a senior Army General accompanying Brezhnev that the official be investigated for corruption and middle classes views against workers as to why the train had stopped.

The General then suggested to Brezhnev that civilian operations of the rail lines had led to their decay to the point that they could no longer reliably operate and suggested turning them over to the military.

Comrade Brezhnev set down his tea and, glancing out the window at a row of factories that had been shuttered, closed the curtains and informed the general that the train was still moving, but to radio for a helicopter to help him get to Minsk faster and please tell the engineer to stop when it arrives.

If we WANTED our schools to teach the history and horrific suffering under Communism, then it would have been taught. People generally want to keep their jobs and will put politics second (and for those who can’t, they’d be replaced by people who can).

BUT...if we simply ‘trust them’ to run the schools, then we have defacto given them free-run over our kids, and literally NOTHING should surprise us. Nor should anything anger us, since it’s OUR FAULT.

Alexander Solzhenitsyn’s the gulag archipelago is a must-read if you know nothing about the Soviet system. And another called the Russian Revolution by Pipes.

Jung Chang’s “Mao” the unknown story is also authoritative.

the Soviet Union, a place that, in living memory, the Jewish people faced a modern-kind of slavery

It wasn't just us. He should read The Gulag Archipelago if he wants to learn about the Soviet Union.

That’s why you didn’t learn anything about the commies.
