Thirty-two years ago, in his final State of the Union address, Ronald Reagan described America as the “shining city on a hill.”
That characterization of the United States was accurate then and it is accurate today, though according to a nonpartisan analysis of human freedom around the globe, our shine has lost some of its luster.
The CATO institute in Washington, DC recently published its annual Human Freedom Index, according to which the United States dropped nine points, and now qualifies as only the 17th freest country among 162 nations ranked. New Zealand, Switzerland and Hong Kong continue to hold the top three spots as the freest countries on earth, with Venezuela, Sudan and Syria holding the dubious distinction as the least free. Japan and Estonia are among the nations whose citizens fared better than did ours in the encyclopedic survey.

Bob Barr, 2008 Libertarian Party presidential candidate.
He’s still alive?........................

It wouldn’t surprise me to see places like Ghana rank as more free.
Can you speak your mind on the street without getting fired?
Barr should had abortions to Capital Murder statistics.
That's up to your employer. In a free country they can hire or fire you for any reason, unless you work for the government.
Let's see, who was President in 2018? The most pro-freedom president we've had in my lifetime? The most anti-oppressive-big-state president in my lifetime? The guy who talked up and cheered freedom at every single rally? The guy who reduced suffocating federal regulations by half?
And we dropped NINE points to 17th place in ONE YEAR? Absolute BULL SH!T.
Don't despair, fellow FReepers! On the bright side, the study found we scored a perfect 10.0 for “Access to Cable and Satellite” and “Same-Sex Relationships.”
hong kong #3? that doesn’t seem right in light of what happened there over the last year
