BARR: America’s ‘Freedom’ Rating Slips Significantly
Daily Caller ^ | March 9, 2021 | Bob Barr

Thirty-two years ago, in his final State of the Union address, Ronald Reagan described America as the “shining city on a hill.”

That characterization of the United States was accurate then and it is accurate today, though according to a nonpartisan analysis of human freedom around the globe, our shine has lost some of its luster.

The CATO institute in Washington, DC recently published its annual Human Freedom Index, according to which the United States dropped nine points, and now qualifies as only the 17th freest country among 162 nations ranked. New Zealand, Switzerland and Hong Kong continue to hold the top three spots as the freest countries on earth, with Venezuela, Sudan and Syria holding the dubious distinction as the least free. Japan and Estonia are among the nations whose citizens fared better than did ours in the encyclopedic survey.

The data on which this 2020 index is based is from 2018, insofar as that is the most recent year for which comprehensive data was available to CATO....

So we ranked #17 when Trump was President, before the lockdowns and before Pelosi was Speaker. I wonder where we would rank using current data.

Bob Barr was the only eligible candidate for President on my 2008 ballot, so I voted for him.

After the last election, his estimation of our freedom is rather optimistic.

It’s hard to tell. New Zealand has certainly fallen farther since 2018 than us in terms of freedom.

At least we get to be more than 5 miles from home.

It wouldn’t surprise me to see places like Ghana rank as more free.

That's up to your employer. In a free country they can hire or fire you for any reason, unless you work for the government.

"The data on which this 2020 index is based is from 2018...a nine point drop to #17 over the course of a single year."

Let's see, who was President in 2018? The most pro-freedom president we've had in my lifetime? The most anti-oppressive-big-state president in my lifetime? The guy who talked up and cheered freedom at every single rally? The guy who reduced suffocating federal regulations by half?

And we dropped NINE points to 17th place in ONE YEAR? Absolute BULL SH!T.

Don't despair, fellow FReepers! On the bright side, the study found we scored a perfect 10.0 for “Access to Cable and Satellite” and “Same-Sex Relationships.”
