Sunday night, CBS’ “60 Minutes” chronicled the struggle in the city of Columbus, especially among young people, during the COVID-19 lockdowns that cost many their livelihoods.
The center of the segment was 23-year-old Courtney Yoder, who before the pandemic was homeless, and had almost saved enough money from working to be able to move off the streets before the birth of her first child.
“Working actually was something good for me,” Yoder told Scott Pelley. “And then when I lost it, it was like, ‘Now I have nothing, you know what I mean, to look forward to.’ Because I actually felt good about myself. I felt accomplished. I felt like I was doing something in my life. I had stacked up three checks. I was actually trying. Then all that gets taken from me.”
Yoder was working in a restaurant, until it was forced to close due to the pandemic. Not only did she lose her job, but life as a homeless person became even more difficult. Since public buildings were closed, she couldn’t even go to the library.
The segment noted that the pandemic hit young, low-wage workers the hardest....

Refer them to this episode to show how badly the stupid lockdowns effected the people they claim to want to help via the policies and politicians they support.
I doubt what the low-wage workers in Columbus had to go through is limited to Columbus.
They have never given a crap about the people they claim to want to help. That’s just to get their votes. All they really care about is their rich donor base and government unions. The lockdowns were carefully constructed to keep the money flowing to them.

Where did she get the sperm?
There are 1000’s of job openings in Columbus and the suburbs. Many warehouse jobs are paying $18 an hour. Most young people will not take a job packing boxes in a warehouse as long as they can get unemployment $$.
I’m not leaving the crow’s nest. I’d rather piss on the miserable bastards.
I’m sorry. An apparently healthy 23 year old is homeless?
No parents? No friends? Says she’s pregnant - Where is the sperm donator? [I will not besmirch the title of “Father”]
You can get a room through Craigslist in Columbus, OH for about $250-$400/month. Easily covered with govvy bennies.
Calling BS. Story doesn’t say but its likely drugs that is the cause of her homelessness.
When I lived in the UK as a young, naive lib...I finally realized that Labour HATED the blue collar workers and middle class.
I pray we can pass HB 90 in Ohio, so that no governor or any single person can EVER do this to us again.
Regardless of how this young woman became homeless, you clearly- in your haste to judge her - missed the overall point. The lockdown hurt many people and destroyed jobs and lives. She may suffer from a mental illness, since many homeless people have some form of mental illness. As to where her family is, well, sometimes the street might actually be safer than some family homes. It’s a sad fact.
Thank you. You get it.
And to the extent that some of these homeless people want to work and need to find a niche right now— a job they feel they can handle and feel comfortable around their co-workers and clients until they are ready for something more—the lockdowns took away many of their choices to work some hours in such jobs.
The shelters do not have as much room due to social distancing requirements, nor do the places where they could hang out during the day and get a hot shower, coffee, and someone to talk to.
And there are not as many donations to go toward expanding shelters because people are out of work or their hours have been cut or they are helping family who are out of work.
Drug treatment centers and Narcotics Anonymous programs have also been hurt.
I started working for $.60 an hour in the mid 60's and just before I graduated school, I was up to $1.10 an hour for 2 months before I went into the military. Military pay wasn't the best but it was steady.
When I got out, I worked at anything I could find. I've made some good money and then gone flat broke three times in my life because of bad or unlucky circumstances.
Now, in my mid-70s, with my multiple careers over with, I am debt free, cash in the bank, own 4 properties in three states and live very comfortably.
But my point is that one doesn't make it as a success right away or all at once usually. It takes steady, persistent hard work and eventually you'll make it. There are setbacks but those come to most people who are struggling to make it.
The biggest lesson to be learned from losing it all and falling down and breaking your leg, is to get back up and find another horse to ride to finish the race on. Too many young people want the good things in life handed to them. Doesn't work that way, despite what the democRATS say.
You don't deserve anything but what this country has to offer everyone. Opportunities to be successful. Not guarantees to be successful but opportunities.
The moaners, groaners, complainers and whiners won't get anywhere. It takes someone with the mettle to get up and keep trying before success will come your way. Never give up because quitters never win. Those who work hard and persist will do fine eventually.
But forget about all these woe is me stories. It will only depress you and discourage you from succeeding.
Speaking for the situation in Columbus, OH, the young lady has a good story, and I am glad that she is learning to right herself, though her path may be difficult.
I suspect, that she will succeed.
Columbus, OH has many combat zones, and the price tag for a roof over your head - mentioned previously - puts you inside one of those combat zones.
Chicago, Baltimore, etc. get the press, but Columbus is no less dangerous.
What Columbus does have, are some police officers who also happen to be self-righting and worth supporting. (Note, that I wrote “some” -— because there are also some others who are naturally-inclined to be political within the bureaucracy.)
In some of the combat zones, where the good cops get to know you, they will show up, and in strength, just for little old you. Because they like to stand up for people who are determined, in the face of odds not in favor of people trying to do the right thing.
Yeah could we please place the blame where due. As in our dwarf Governor Mike DeWine.
Life is about choices. The people in these stories have made some really poor life choices.
The virus didn't cause any of this to happen. Liberal politicians and government bureaucrats made this happen. The response to this virus has been one of this biggest mistakes this country has ever made.
Living in and voting for blue state policies will destroy your life faster than any pandemic will ever do.
"You don't deserve anything but what this country has to offer everyone. Opportunities to be successful. Not guarantees to be successful but opportunities."
Bravo! Same story here. Worked my butt off and am now starting to enjoy what I've earned after 50 years. It takes persistence, faith in one's self, more persistence, and delayed gratification. Nothing is easy, you earn it.
And I wouldn't have it any other way. Those wanting a hand out don't understand character and value. It's not about what you have, it's about what you are.
Another thing I learned by trial and error was that there are many things in life that are really unimportant in the big scheme of things but by the time you’ve learned that lesson, it’s too late. You’ve already wasted your time on them.
Excellent points.
