A Catholic school teacher who called into question the death of George Floyd while she was speaking with students has been placed on administrative leave, according to reports.

WCMH Channel 4 reports that the Catholic Diocese of Columbus released a statement saying that Deborah DelPrince, a theology teacher at Bishop Ready High School, made “unsupported personal assertions and opinions” in regard to Floyd’s death. Floyd, 46, died in May 2020 after a Milwaukee police officer knelt on his neck for more than nine minutes during an arrest.

According to the New York Times, a medical examiner ruled the death a homicide caused by “a combination of the officers’ use of force, the presence of fentanyl and methamphetamine in Floyd’s system, and his underlying health conditions.” Former police officer Derek Chauvin is scheduled to go on trial next month on charges of second-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter in connection with Floyd’s death....The photo led to a discussion of Floyd’s death. In a video from the class discussion, DelPrince reportedly says that it’s “not necessarily true” that Floyd was unable to breathe. When a student asks if she was disputing the manner of Floyd’s death, DelPrince answers, “Yes, it is disputed.”...

So much for the idea of teaching students about how things such as the court system, law, evidence, the role and responsibilities of juries, media coverage of a crime, etc. works.

A Russian who grew up in the Soviet Union but is now an American citizen told me, (Approximately) We had more freedom to speak in the Soviet Union than I have here. Here if I say anything racial or sexist or politically incorrect, I can be fired. Even if what they think I meant is not what I meant at all.

Yes, but one can still develop a lesson plan around the coverage of alleged crime that has galvanized national attention.

True. I did a search on “drugs” and “rectum”, and got zero hits.

The knee on the neck was an approved MPD procedure at the time of the incident.

Floyd died of pulmonary edema from an opioid overdose. Foaming on his lips was a sign of pulmonary edema.

There was no sign of injury to his neck or asphyxiation.

Chauvin will be convicted and the conviction will be reversed on appeal.

Floyd was having a heart attack IMO. There was no evidence of strangulation or traumatic asphyxiation; he had a 90% occlusion of his right coronary artery and his shortness of breath and the progression of his symptoms were all completely consistent with a man having a heart attack.

Isn’t that part of normal human discourse? How does that affect your job?

Yeah. it also could have said, “Floyd, 46, died in May 2020 after overdosing on drugs.”

In a Catholic school, the administrators and the Church itself, control what can and cannot be said in the classroom.

They should have a list published then.

True. I did a search on “drugs” and “rectum”, and got zero hits.

He alledgedly told the cops he had been "hooping", i.e., what you said. The medical examiners report does not mention asphyxiation, and the charging documents state that early results "revealed no physical findings that support a diagnosis of traumatic asphyxia or strangulation."

In addition to fentanyl and methamphetamine, the toxicology report from the autopsy showed that Floyd also had cannabinoids in his system when he died.

Floyd also had heart disease, hypertension and sickle cell trait — a mostly asymptomatic form of the more serious sickle cell disease, an inherited blood disorder that primarily affects African Americans. He also tested positive for Corona virus.

Clearly homicide.

Some students are too emotionally invested in the folklore of certain public incidents. If you’re a teacher, you have to think twice before discussing the matter in the traditional way. Many students don’t have brains big enough to take in new info that may challenge the myth.
A teacher has to wonder;
“Should I just let them stay stupid so I can stay securely employed? Would my principal have my back? Probably not.”
Matters of sex and race are the two hottest button topics.
