California’s AB-5 destroyed many freelance jobs. Now Democrats want to expand the policy to the entire country.

A proposed new federal law is modeled after California’s AB-5. You can read about it here:

Joe Biden supports making the policy nationwide:

After many news reports of AB-5 destroying jobs in California, Lorena Gonzalez, the California politician who created AB-5, says the jobs that got destroyed were “not good jobs to begin with.”

Here are some examples of the devastation that the law caused in California:

The DemoNaziCommunist plan is crystal clear:
1. Destroy as many jobs as possible
2. Especially destroy non- union jobs and independent businesses
3. Result - far higher dependency on welfare handouts.
4. People who are rendered dependent do not fight back much when the rest of their constitutional liberties are taken from them.

The left wants to destroy all small business. And in effect destroy the middle class. Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) specifically admitted this on CNN yesterday.

I think it is designed to eliminate the self-employed person, not the small business. The small business is generally licensed by the state and provides tax revenue.

A self-employed individual or gig worker does not own a legitimate business and by definition works with cash or loose reporting requirements. I think some higher up believes many of these workers do not pay taxes or report some income and thus should be canceled.

It is also designed to crack down on workers that work for only one customer receiving a 1099NEC. The gubmit wants the employer to pay into all the various new taxes they plane to shove up our butts.

Technically a self employed contractor is a small businessman. And you’ve got to combine the anti gig legislation with the massive shutdown of small businesses over this COVID sham. No, they want us all working for the government or a multinational globalist corporation. The goal of the communists has been the elimination of the middle class

Nutso control freaks. They want to make sure every penny is properly taxed and to pad the employment numbers among other things. Soon they will be after bartenders and hairdressers and the like, most of whom work independently from the owner/leaser of the building they work.

And the market has pretty much sorted this issue out. If I order from Grubhub, there is a $1.50 surcharge that goes to “driver benefits”. I don’t begrudge that at all, though I am also a generous tipper. I got no problem with that surcharge, it is transparent and clear and solves the social problems/optics without government interference.

Only jobs they can harvest for union dues/Democrat political contributions are allowed!

you think it’s bad to be self employed? Tell that to Uber drivers, artists, musicians, consultants, wedding planners, journalists, to name a few.

“does not own a legitimate business and by definition works with cash or loose reporting requirements. I think some higher up believes many of these workers do not pay taxes or report some income and thus should be canceled.” Do you really think all people that work for themselves are illegitimate and tax evaders?

Seriously? It’s the AFL-CIO and other unions. They want more dues. Have you read about some States that the unions passed laws where a parent could not get disability money for caring for their child without paying union dues? Or the neighbor that got into trouble for watching a couple children for a few minutes until the school bus came.

I think that is what our new administration believes, I certainly don't condone it. They are looking for every tax dollar everywhere. I have been a small business since 1986 and understand the scrutiny and reporting requirements we are placed under.

True. They want all small businesses closed.

Although I agree AB5 that all the delivery services should be regulated. Own vehicle, own maintenance, own insurance, own gas, own risk.

Profit all to InstaCart, DoorDash, Uber, Lyft etc. When these expenses are taken out, it gets close to sub-minimum wage. Peanuts to the drivers. Even Amazon uses you as a independent contractor driving their vans some places, hiding behind contractors companies of which, you yourself is a contractor.

Do not agree with AB 5 with anything else.

EXCUSE ME:

I have been self-employed doing accounting/bookkeeping for small businesses since 1980. Prior to doing it full time, I did it nights & weekends.

Small businesses that didn’t EVER need a full time person to do the books. Often—only the owner & SOMETIMES one employee.

I REPORTED all my INCOME on 1099 forms, and made sure my clients forms were properly filed every January....

I did work for machine shops-—engine builders—geologist—bakery shop-—custom motorcycle builder—landscape company—welding shops...ALL kinds of different places that NEVER would need a full time bookkeeper.

You are casting a large net with your comments.

You owe me & thousands of others a sincere apology.

I still have ONE client...

I sent back his 2020 data —which was the 51st year I have done his bookkeeping.

IF you think this is such a problem——make sure you go after the ILLEGAL INVADERS working for CASH.

ALSO—figure how the UNION that would cover all these different kinds of jobs...and the “Contracts’ that companies would have to negotiate.

Ranchers/farmers are self-employed & they don’t need a union.

Well, then, they're fools. The contractors undoubtedly have to pay the full 15.3% into SS and Medicare, for example, I'm sure.
