To Help Save the Planet, Coca-Cola Tries out a New Bottle - Made of Paper

Have you been unfortunate fortunate enough to try a paper straw?

Being on the West Coast, I’ve had the pleasure.

Many, many times.

For those of you yet to partake, you’ll love it — assuming you have the digestive system of a goat.

As for function, the straw pulls double duty.

For the first 4 minutes, it allows you to swallow liquid.

At 4:01 and beyond — in my experience — it feeds you a paper stick.

MMMmmmMMM good.

Apropos, Coca-Cola’s about to try a paper bottle.

From The Daily Wire:

Coca-Cola plans to do a test-run of 2,000 paper bottles this summer to see how they perform in the marketplace and with consumers. The prototype was made “by a Danish company from an extra-long paper shell that still contains a thin plastic liner.” It is a first step in a long-term project of completely ridding plastic from the company’s drink containers.

Per the British Broadcasting Company, the mission “is to create a 100% recyclable, plastic-free bottle capable of preventing gas escaping from carbonated drinks.”

And here’s a trick: “The barrier must…ensure no [fibers] flake off into the liquid.”

Because:

[Failure would risk] altering the taste of the drink — or potentially fall foul of health and safety checks.

As worded by the BBC, America’s favorite soft drink aims to produce “zero waste by 2030.”

Clearly, it’s impossible to produce no waste. But Coke has reason to turn a new leaf: Last year, charity organization Break Free From Plastic deemed it the world’s number one plastic polluter.

In service to a transformation, the Danish enterprise — Paper Bottle Company, or Paboco — has accomplished quite a feat — the biodegradable container had to be moldable to various shapes as well as take inked labels.

More from BBC:

After more than seven years of lab work, the firm is now ready to host a trial in Hungary this summer of Coca-Cola’s fruit drink Adez. Initially, this will involve 2,000 bottles distributed via a local retail chain.

And they’re not just doing it for Coke:

Absolut, the vodka-maker, is due to test 2,000 paper bottles of it own in the UK and Sweden of its pre-mixed, carbonated raspberry drink. And beer company Carlsberg is also building prototypes of a paper beer bottle.

So how do you make curved paper pass muster?

Michael Michelsen, the firm’s commercial manager, says the bottles are formed out of a single piece of paper-fibre-based material to give them strength.

“That’s part of the secret really,” he explained, adding that [molding] a single object – rather than relying on joins – ensured the bonds between the fibres stayed robust.

“With a clever combination of product design and the strong [fiber] blend, that’s what makes it really possible to not break under pressure.”

In theory, it’s been sufficiently engineered.

However — as noted by Michael — they won’t know for sure ’til taking a real-world shot.

Would you buy a soft drink contained in curved paper?

You may soon get your chance.

When the time comes, a word of advice: Don’t use a paper straw.

the straw went limp and began to collapse.

Tell me about it.

It doesn't get better with age...

Sure. And you’ll be drinking some of the paper. Plus the paper will absorb some of the cola. How will the paper interact with the cola?
Forget it.

I agree, I don't drink coke

I honestly don’t remember when I last drank a soda. Diet soda always gave me a headache. And so much sugar in the regular.

No thank you. I do not drink any of these chemical concoctions and have not for several years. With this kind of nonsense, I will not be changing my habits any time, soon.

I have an idea, how about glass bottles. Less dangerous chemicals in the manufacturing process.

And very recyclable. Even more so, if you're not particularly picky about the appearance of the glass. The biggest problem with glass recycling is that you can't mix colored glass and clear glass without it affecting the clarity of the resultant product.

Aluminum is the most economical material to recycle because of the huge disparity between the energy requirements of smelting ore and recycling existing refined AL.

Paper is among the least profitable recyclable material, because of the limited utility of recycled paper products.

Most of the recycling industry is nothing but a huge scam designed to make people feel like their virtue signalling is actually useful.

There will come a day when our ancestors will mine our existing garbage dumps, because the material there will be valuable enough to do so.

This is really going to upset the ‘We Love You, TREESSSSSSSS’ crowd.

I remember paper straws from a half-century ago. They worked fine. Soft drinks were even served in paper cups. As was coffee.

Then came the greenies complaining about the use of paper. So plastic became the replacement.

Now, we are back to paper. Funny how things cycle.

Broken glass bottles can be hazardous to the health of a car tire.

Can be.

OTOH, once upon a time I was cutting across the coastal range from PCH to I/S 5, looming out of the darkness was a row of glass bottles all the way across the road.

Something in the back of my mind screamed "AMBUSH!!!"

I didn't even slow down, figuring I wanted to be far away from the fire sack when a tire went flat.

The tires never did go flat...

I maintain that “New Coke” was introduced as part of a plan. “Classic Coke”, when reintroduced, switched from sugar to corn syrup.

Yup. At the time of the New Coke thing, I worked for a market research firm that handled the Coca Cola account. I saw the entire thing start to finish from a rather unique perspective. To this day, everyone says that 'New Coke' was an absolute failure. Here's the bottom line: At the end of the entire campaign, Coke had gained 6% market share.

It was fascinating to watch how the entire thing played out. I wrote up my observations about it here on FR a few years ago. I should probably look that up and document it elsewhere.

"...paper shell that still contains a thin plastic liner."

So, not a paper bottle.

paper straws dissolve into soda and you get whatever was in that straw as you drink

same will happen over time with wax coated hard stock paper

They already have a container that does everything they need, it’s called a ‘GLASS BOTTLE”.

Shocking but true.

It’s like NASA spending Millions of Taxpayer Dollars developing a Zero Gravity Pen while the Ruskies just used a Pencil.

I don’t understand. Isn’t reusing glass bottles a “zero-waste” endeavor? And isn’t glass a good and healthy container? Seriously, I don’t get it.
