Longest Serving Guns In U.S. Military History

The United States military is currently seeking to replace its M4 Carbine and M249 squad assault weapon (SAW), while the M240 could also soon be replaced by a more modern platform. And while the M240’s replacement could even fill the role employed by the M2 .50 caliber, it isn’t likely the “Ma Deuce” will be retired anytime soon. Despite its nearly 90 years of service, it just does the job.

It is just one of a few weapons that remained in the American arsenal for decades. Here are what I would argue are just a sample of some of the longest-serving guns in U.S. military history:

My vote is for the 1911, but that is just me.

I expected to see the Garand in there, but I suppose it’s lifespan was shortened by the introduction of the M-14.

M1903 Springfield isn’t used today but it was in service for 60 years.

Colt M1911 .45 pistol, which was used by the U.S. military from the 1911 until 1986: 75 years.

The Browning M1919 Machine Gun, still very much in use today: 102 years.

M2 .50 caliber machine gun. Ma Deuce. Introduced in 1933, the M2 is an old workhorse that isn’t going out to pasture anytime soon: 88 years

M60 was introduced in 1957, it was perhaps the best Cold War era general-purpose machine gun: 64 years

Figured the M-60 would be there, it’s been around for a long time and served it’s country well. I’ve smoked allot of M-60 barrels in a short amount of time.

1. M249 SAW is the Squad AUTOMATIC Weapon, not ASSAULT Weapon.

2. The most prolific user of the 1911 pistol in today’s US military is the Marine Corps, which issues it to its Force Recon and Raider units as the M45.

3. The M60 was nowhere near the best GPMG of the Cold War. The FN-MAG was far better and in fact, it replaced the M60 as the M240 in US nomenclature.

Incidentally, the receiver and action of the M240 is basically a modified version of the Browning used on the M1919.

"My vote is for the 1911, but that is just me."

Yeah, me too. It always goes off when you pull the trigger and it kills what you hit.

That idiot site's push of the M60 as "the best Cold War medium machinegun" is not based on reality. It was a basic forging surrounded by thin stampings and plastic that had to be babied to keep going.

That writer's probably on SACO Defense's payroll: no other countries bought that cheapo weapon - and our NATO allies stuck with the FN-MAG or derivations of the WWII MG-42.

Thank you for sharing that. I’ll simply say I’m not the one posting a dozen things from questionable sites every day.

Yes Ma Deuce without a doubt is the queen of the battlefield.

Just recently learned a new fact that it has a little flip paddle in the middle that will make it fire in non-full auto mode.
