WHO WILL TELL THE GREENS THERE IS NO BATTERY FAIRY?

For the longest while I have been asking, “Where do environmentalists and Democrats think all these batteries for our oil-free transportation fleet are going to come from?” It seems they think there is a Battery Fairy out there somewhere who will magically supply the ginormous battery capacity, and additional supply of electricity to charge them, in order to deliver us to our blessed fossil-fuel-free future.

So kudos to Wired magazine on “The Spiraling Environmental Cost of our Lithium Battery Addiction,” which reminds us that there are, you know, tradeoffs between various kinds of energy systems we might use:

Demand for lithium is increasing exponentially, and it doubled in price between 2016 and 2018. According to consultancy Cairn Energy Research Advisors, the lithium ion industry is expected to grow from 100 gigawatt hours (GWh) of annual production in 2017, to almost 800 GWhs in 2027. . .

But there’s a problem. As the world scrambles to replace fossil fuels with clean energy, the environmental impact of finding all the lithium required to enable that transformation could become a serious issue in its own right. “One of the biggest environmental problems caused by our endless hunger for the latest and smartest devices is a growing mineral crisis, particularly those needed to make our batteries,” says Christina Valimaki an analyst at Elsevier. . .

They know all that. Even Musk has said there’s not enough power generation. The object is to throttle inexpensive travel; to keep people corralled; to force the use of public trans; etc.

Yes, they believe in the battery fairy.

I talked to a dedicated green in Australia. He was intellegent and well read.

He said we are making tremendous progress in batteries, and we will have all the cheap and energy dense batteries we need very shortly... Just around the corner, so to speak.

What’s not mentioned in all this is that the use of Lithium batteries does not deplete the Lithium.

And where will the energy needed to extract and transport the chemicals necessary to make the batteries come from?

It’s like Man telling God he can make Man from dirt. Well then, how do you make dirt?

They use diesel and gasoline powered vehicles and heavy equipment to mine the rare earth metals that make batteries, not to mention the absolute environmental damage caused by mining said materials. So much for Green.

Winnie the Flu is the battery fairy. His country is the origin point for most of the rare earth minerals necessary for these batteries, as far as I know.

Actually, he is right..... new very dense power batteries utilizing new materials other than Lithium are being developed not just proffered.....

Unfortunately, new technology, especially those that involve radical new propositions don’t happen overnight.....

What is tremendously lacking, is the electrical generation to support the new technology. Not to mention distribution for charging.....

It will come but will take time......

And it won’t be solar or wind......

The other major hurdle for electric vehicles is CHARGING TIME. It’s one thing to recharge your car battery while it’s parked in your garage overnight, but it will be decades (if ever) before a car battery can be charged in the same period of time it takes to refill a gas tank.

Haha, it does not really matter that the mining of Lithium is environmentally damaging, and that energy costs will skyrocket when cheaper energy sources are deemed unusable.

What really matters is whose crony capitalists can be installed to profit from the new green energy companies.

The object is to throttle inexpensive travel; to keep people corralled; to force the use of public trans; etc.

For some, or perhaps many leftists in positions of power, yes.

But the majority of people, left and right are so ignorant of electricity, electronics, power generation, the grid and storage, that for them, the tooth fairy exists.

They believe the propaganda that electric vehicles are the way to go.

That being said, in the early 1900s, a lot of local delivery trucks and local busses and trollies were battery powered and charged at night, during off peak times.

They used Edison batteries that are rugged, heavy, but get better with age and use. The required no exotic materials to produce.

The production of them ceased in the USA as there was no repeat business.

Returning to that simple technology for local use trucks and busses makes sense.

Small auto and truck engines have become so efficient, they beat electric vehicles for energy use, and should remain gasoline and diesel.
