University of Minnesota infectious disease expert rebukes Fauci for double-mask advice

Double-mask? Only if you want your mask(s) to not work as intended.

President Biden’s COVID-19 advisor Anthony Fauci, a holdover from the Trump administration, is getting publicly challenged by a new Biden COVID-19 advisor, Michael Osterholm of the University of Minnesota.

In an interview with WCCO Radio this week, the head of the university’s Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy said Fauci’s recommendation to wear two masks at once to stop viral infections made no epidemiological sense.

“Masks, as they’re defined[,] work in two ways,” Osterholm said:

The first is in regards to how that masks fits. How well does it fit around you? It’s like swimming goggles. They don’t usually leak through the lenses they leak through the seal around your eyes or face....

Oh, now Fauci is a “Trump holdover”, in spite of having his extremely lucrative government job for 30+ years. Frankly I’ll be happy to see that dwarf fall into disfavor.

Saw someone say the following lol

If I’m in a store, and see someone with only 18 masks on, and not 19, I’m gonna just automatically assume they are a white supremacist.

Two mask, of the same filtration quality is silly. Either one will work or neither will. It’s like the air cleaner on your car. Putting two on the engine intake does not not stop more sand from getting in your engine.

From Twitter:

Masks - it’s binary:

If you don’t have COVID - it’s theatre, can’t stop spread.

If you do have COVID - your body has decided it needs to expel it from your body to survive. You say “No, body! I prefer to breathe it back in over & over, maximizing my chances of lung infection.”

Saw my first double-maskers (outside of a dentist’s office) at Trader Joe’s yesterday. They were shopping together—an elderly woman, a middle-aged woman, and a college-age man. I’m walking around wearing my mask as a chin strap (they WILL kick you out of Trader Joe’s if you don’t have it and I needed a shelter-in-place supply of 2-Buck Chuck) and these people looked at me with pure fear in their eyes.

I dealt with respiratory protection in the workplace. It can get complicated. To hear a medical doctor say that it’s “common sense” that wearing two masks is better makes me think the guy is truly an idiot.

Actually, two filters of the entrapment type layered one over the other will work better than one, just not twice as good. Your example of the auto air filter and the face mask are good examples of entrapment filters. Filter tech.... There are two basic filtration mechanisms. One is entrapment and the second is absolute pore size.

Let's look at the absolute pore size first so we can quickly get it out of the way. An absolute pore size filter is going to be along the line of a film with approximately uniform hole sizes in it. They have a sharp particle size cutoff, a low holding capacity and a large pressure drop. Using the automobile air filter as an example, imagine a filter that looks like a paper thin pancake larger than the engine and lasts 10 miles before air flow to the engine is reduced to where engine performance is impaired. No more to say.... Well, there is one more thing. For a face mask, it would have the same effect as covering your mouth and nose with Saran Wrap.

So, back to entrapment filters. This is what is used in face masks. These are made of long fibers that have a torturous path that entangle particles. Particles are not removed as an absolute size but as a percentage. Also, this type of filter has a high capacity for particle holding and a low pressure drop.

Layering two face masks is not going to do much on removing virus particles, they are too small. Layering will increase removal of droplets that have attached virus particles as droplets are much larger size.

Certified surgical masks and breathing air filter cartridges are rated to the PM 2.5 standard that is a percent of removal criteria for particles greater than 2.5 micrometers (microns) in size. Industrially, if your in a situation where there are hazardous particles that are too small for PM 2.5 then you have to gear up with supplied air not a filter.

A virus particle is roughly 1/1000th smaller than the PM 2.5 standard. Mismatch although the droplet pass through can be reduced at some sort of efficiency.

Last thing... All this stuff about particle removal can be rendered useless by air leakage around the edges of the mask. Those of us that have worn a face mask in a cool, air conditioned building have seen our glasses fog up at times. This is due to leakage around the mask edges. If air can leak out the face mask and fog glasses, it will also leak in when we inhale. This is why at some level of elevated hazard, professional workers in this environment switch from face masks to gas masks (for greater holding capacity) or at a higher level to supplied air.

I've got to cut out this rambling on...
