In 2020, Americans responded to perceived threats by breaking firearm sales records. In the new year, turmoil over the sanctity of the vote and fears that a new president might keep far-reaching gun-control campaign promises sparked a new rash of firearm sales.
Gun manufacturers’ supply lines in January are stretched thin. In Pittsburgh and across the country, retailers are struggling to meet demand, and some ammunition is hard to find.

I don't know what to say.
No uproar on price gouging, shocking.
Very good article (with the minor exception, that it perpetuates the “AR stands for Armalite Rifle” myth ;^)...
Lost all my primers powder brass bullets lead in a canoe catastrophe.
Just ARmalite
“Some” ammunition is hard to find?
It’s not only hard to find, it’s over 2 and sometimes almost 3 times the price.
I’m not caught anywhere near as short as I was after Newtown but I really wish I had bought another 6,000-7,000 rounds last year like I was thinking about doing.
Between Obama and Biden, ammunition manufacturers might never meet the demand. In addition to Democrat directed riots, people have wised up that we don’t have a legitimate government anymore.
Does the NRA offer a boating class ?
As for the gouging where is all the extra cash going in to the ammo market ending up ?
Raw materials ?
Distribution ?
Retail ?
There is a lot of money going somewhere.
I understand markets and supply and demand , but I can't figure where the $$$ is going.
Anyone ?
His shelves looked as if he had been robbed and even his gun racks were not fully stocked.
I was getting a new scope and while I was waiting for them to laser sight it in, 3 couples, {one young, two middle aged} came in to discuss/buy pistols.
The men were trying to talk their women into smaller guns, but the women wanted bigger guns.
It had an indoor range where you can try them out, and they also took the bigger guns back to the range.
Another scary part to this equation is that you have a gazillion new gun owners who barely know which end goes boom. I guess it’s OK since the vast majoriy of the military doesn’t really know that much more.
Good question.
Talked to a guy locally, who was absolutely outraged by the "price gouging" at a nearby gun store. He didn't know the store owner was paying high prices to local residents, just to get some ammo in stock, and his profit was about a buck a box. (Friend took in 2 cans of surplus 5.56 to sell, which is how I know.)
Why does that shop owner buy small quantities from private sellers? I was in his shop one day, when a husband & wife walked in, looking for their first AR15. They found a nice AR at a reasonable price, but when they asked if the shop had 5.56 ammo, the answer was "sorry, not today" - and that couple walked out, without their new rifle. The shop owner knows that more often than not, you can't sell firearms without ammo. So he buys ammo in small quantities, at high prices, just so he can sell the guns he has in stock (and keep the shop open, pay his employees, etc.).
Anyway, the outraged guy didn't want to hear it. He wanted his ammo now, at Walmart prices (or lower), and figured anything else was "price gouging". I kind of figure he's one of those people who's still pissed they didn't buy a brand new Chicom AK folder for $169, and blames everyone else for the lapse...
;^)
A couple of days ago I related an email alert from CheaperThanDirt...9mm @ $2.00 a round. This morning I got an email for .45...$2.60 a round.
Profits? Maybe?
OMG! You too? My folks lost all their guns in a tragic boating accident; they’re 1200 feet down with the shrimp.
The bit about price gouging was a bit tongue in cheek, I get it. I have no immediate need for ammo but I am looking for a new rifle for my son’s birthday in a few months or maybe as 1st gun for my new collection since I got rid of my old collection a few weeks ago.
But for who ?
My local guy says he's not making it.
I love shrimp!!
