"The trial committee presented its report on October 2, 1989. Sixteen days later, the trial began in the U.S. Senate, with prosecution and defense given two hours to summarize their cases. The Senate deliberated in closed session on October 19, 1989. The following day, the Senate voted on 11 of the 17 articles of impeachment, convicting Hastings, by the necessary two-thirds vote, on 8 articles (1-5, 7-9). On two articles (6, 17) the vote fell short of the required majority to convict. On article 11, the Senate voted 95 not guilty to 0 guilty. Having achieved the necessary majority vote to convict on 8 articles, the Senate’s president pro tempore (Robert C. Byrd) ordered Hastings removed from office. The Senate did not vote to disqualify him from holding future office.

I think this delay is because some Rs wouldn’t allow the Senate to conduct other business- like Cabinet appointments etc- to proceed during the trial.
That’s a good sign that some loyal Americans there are willing to stand against the “business as usual” for their principles.

There is no constitutional underpinning for holding a trial to remove someone from office after he has left office. Congress is grossly exceeding its authority.

If President Trump wanted to run again in 2024 (which I seriously doubt) there would be no enforceable law to stop him.

Removal from office is what normally happens if the Senate votes to convict (like Congressman Alcee Hastings, who was impeached as a federal judge). But the Senate also has the option to disqualify the person from holding future public office:

U.S. Constitution Article I, Section 3:

The Senate shall have the sole Power to try all Impeachments. When sitting for that Purpose, they shall be on Oath or Affirmation. When the President of the United States is tried, the Chief Justice shall preside: And no Person shall be convicted without the Concurrence of two thirds of the Members present.

Judgment in Cases of Impeachment shall not extend further than to removal from Office, and disqualification to hold and enjoy any Office of honor, Trust or Profit under the United States: but the Party convicted shall nevertheless be liable and subject to Indictment, Trial, Judgment and Punishment, according to Law.

Well, you may be right - probably not, because there is plenty of English precedent back to the 1500s, most of the people who were impeached in the Commons were what you would call today “private citizens”.

But that’s not the case here. Trump was impeached when he was President. BARELY President, true - but President.

My fear is that this will be managed in such a way that he will not get a full forum to defend himself and present evidence, but a process where his presentation is chopped up and sharply limited and he will be cut off whenever the Marxists want. They are not going to allow him or his attorneys full freedom IMO and media coverage will be so sharply biased that he will be presented as an enemy of the whole planet.
