I have some family photos stored on Microsoft OneDrive just for ease of access, no matter where I go.

That’s getting shut down today.

"The Cloud" was never anything more than rental space in somebody else's server farm. Caveat emptor.

Welcome to FR.

I just refused to be drawn up into Google’s or Apple’s cloud. I had to call technical support to suppress the constant demands for my permission to share my stuff into the cloud, but I managed to do it. NO CLOUD for me.

A proper warning and sound advice.

It’s about cutting costs. But when you get right down to it why should anyone believe that the cloud is any more or any less secure than a company’s private network is? So there’s no reason to think that a company’s data is any less secure in the cloud or any more secure in house.

I never understood why so many people thought it was cute to store all their data on somebody else’s computers instead of their own

Thousands and perhaps millions of Deplorables will then face the same disconnection from the technology so many of us now take for granted. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

No loss, We deplorables live in the real world, not in a virtual one.If the Amish can do it, so can we.

What’s the solution?>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Never used the cloud. Did not trust it EVER. It allows someone else to have control over MY very important stuff. I see the temptation, though.

The Cloud can't be Trusted

My first reaction, "well DUH!, YA THINK?!??!?"

I don't store any data in the Cloud. Never did on Farcebook, Twatter, or any other social media site.

About 8-10 years ago I saw a technology talk by a guy who started by saying:

“I used to be an Application Service Provider, then I did Software as a Service, and now I do Cloud Computing.”

The room was mostly full of people who’d been around the block a few times, and we cracked up!

I have my data on-site, thank you very much. With off-site backups.

The cloud is just another name for the Internet.

Whether you data is stored locally or on someone else’s server (for example, this post is stored on JimRob’s server in California), if your data routes through the Internet, it is part of the overall cloud infrastructure.

The biggest threat of all is who controls that routing, and can they concentrate their resources to stop your packets because they’re YOUR packets?

Ever since the first financial transaction occurred between two private parties on the Internet, the vulnerability to be shut down from commerce has existed. From that moment more and more business has been done this way, to the point now that trillions would be lost if the Internet was stopped.

Can any one entity stop the entire Internet? Stop the Internet for those they do not like?

How about multiple entities united under the Black and Red flag of totalitarian thought?

democrats in government, government employees from totalitarian states, Google, Amazon, Apple, Microsoft, Marriot, Citibank, Twitter... et all... are now doing just that.

Exactly right. If they can pull the rug out from under Parler they can do it to any of us, any business.

I have said for a long time: “If it’s in the cloud do you really own it?”

I have a SATA drive for storage but would like easy access to photos. Is a thumb drive adequate as a mini back up for my docs/photos? I only keep work related things on OneDrive becuase workplace uses it. I have never trusted the ‘cloud’ I used to work in a secure environment and was frankly concerned, if not shiocked when such systems started migrating to the cloud...

What about your banking? Your passwords? In some cases you could even be denied the use of your 'smart' home or your wifi connected vehicle if the technocrats decide to deny you access.

Laura Loomer had her Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, PayPal and Pateon accounts frozen/deleted, and her Chase bank account closed. Uber and Lyft also banned her from using them.

Even when she won the GOP primary for Congress, neither Twitter nor Facebook would re-instate her -- brazen electoral interference. But of course nothing was done.

Anyone who trusts a cloud is naive.
Do your own backups on a removable drive.

For security, “the cloud” is a disaster. It’s like a virtual private network. You trust one supplier instead of the entire internet with your private information. Do you know if you can trust that supplier? Do you know if your information will be hacked or stolen?

The closer I can keep my information to home the better.

I remember a movie that called the same thing “Skynet”...

DOD is also currently going crazy over the cloud too. Pretty insane if a bunch of lefties suddenly decide they don’t like the next war and pull the plug.
