First Starlink Beta Tester Interview ... Using Starlink during Interview!
YouTube and Lon TV ^ | 11/9/20 | Lon TV

Posted on 11/11/2020 6:48:28 AM PST by srmanuel

This is the first interview I've seen of someone who was selected by Starlink as a beta tester...

This particular person is in the IT field so he's knowledgeable about many of the issues that people are interested in.

The user is streaming the video call via Starlink during the interview, the owner of the YouTube channel is running speed testing software during the entire interview, there was a few second video drop during the interview but the audio remained consistent...

I think it's pretty cool, I would love to be one of the beta testers...

Have this wish I wish tonight.

I have asked to be a beta tester...I pay $95.00/mo. for 5 MB down 2 MB up and it’s literally the best i can do in my rural area.

$99.00/mo. for massive speeds seems reasonable.

I am looking forward to the global increase in competition for internet services. There are too many places, including much of the US, where service is limited by few options and poor infrastructure.

And all those SE Asian islands!

Hope to move to this or home 5G when available in our area. We’re rural, and had 10MBPS DSL for years, only recently moving to 30MBPS terrestrial wireless. While it’s an improvement, we still see times when it’s just not enough, especially when I’m working from home.

Just did some crash-course reading on this. So in the future, they’re going to have something like 42,000 satellites up there? Wow. With that kind of infrastructure, $99/month seems like a steal.

...as opposed to Google troughing the neighbor’s yards across the street from us, installing underground cable. Google’s on the other side of the street because AT&T came down OUR side of the street 2 years ago. Then there’s Comcast’s (previously Spectrum/Time Warner/Cablevision) underground cable across our backyard property line.

Satellite sounds mighty good.

They will almost certainly have terahertz pipes between the sats. Speed will go off the charts. Terrestrial broadband will not be able to compete.

Don’t you mean 5 Gb down and 2Gb up? 5 Mb is just a couple of photos.

I think they mean 5Mbps down and 2Mbps up ...

That’s basically DSL speeds. It’s certainly usable for working (assuming latency isn’t that bad), but it isn’t all that great for video.

I wonder how they're solving the latency issues that go with sat internet? From what I understand, that's the biggest issue with satellite.

They're claiming to have lower latency than anything, including fiber. That's amazing considering you're getting a signal from space. I wonder how they pull that off.

Sats are up 400 milesish vs the others out at 22k miles or so. Radio waves are a form of light speed and believe it or not light is slow.

“Don’t you mean 5 Gb down and 2Gb up? 5 Mb is just a couple of photos.”

No, my stats are correct. It takes only 20-25 MB down to stream a 4K movie.

This is all ‘per minute’ rates.

My previous provider offerd ‘up to’ 1.5 MB down but we only achieved 377K down.

That company got WHACKED by the state Public Service Commission.

Thanks! That's simple enough. Less distance=less latency.

Ok. I thought you meant total downloads per month, not speed. And 5 Mb sucks.

Ha!

I hear ya.

Imagine running several businesses out of your home with 377K...

We live just 4 miles from the city center.

Our accessible utilities are: telephone and underground electric.

We have satellite TV, a buried propane tank and a wireless connection to the internet. We have eight phone numbers all cell/VOIP.

Our taxe rate is just 1/2 of folks who are incorporated into the city. So I’ll take that as trade off.

BTW we are not in the city’s 50 year plan as it is expanding west...

I'm pretty much in the same spot, for speed. With my AT&T DSL, the down is 1.5Mb, at $51/month, and with other customers in the neighborhood online, that drops sometimes to 24Kb/sec, or even slower.

The power company says their new service, via the powerlines, will be 250MB, for $65/month, with their equipment installed.

Do any of you have experience with powerline internet? I'd like to know what kind of service you've gotten.

Replies appreciated.
