At Yelp, we value diversity, inclusion and belonging, both internally and on our platform, which means we have a zero tolerance policy to racism. We know these values are important to our users and now more than ever, consumers are increasingly conscious of the types of businesses they patronize and support. In fact, weve seen that reviews mentioning Black-owned businesses were up more than 617% this summer compared to last summer. Support for women-owned businesses has also increased, with review mentions up 114% for the same time period.
Over the summer, Yelp rolled out a number of initiatives to help users find and support Black-owned businesses. We partnered with My Black Receipt on the launch of a Black-owned business attribute and joined the 15 Percent Pledge to further amplify Black-owned businesses. While searches for Black-owned businesses surged on Yelp, so did the volume of reviews warning users of racist behavior at businesses. Today, in response to this, we will now place a distinct Consumer Alert on business pages to caution people about businesses that may be associated with overtly racist actions.
A New Consumer Alert to Stand Against Racism
Communities have always turned to Yelp in reaction to current events at the local level. As the nation reckons with issues of systemic racism, weve seen in the last few months that there is a clear need to warn consumers about businesses associated with egregious, racially-charged actions to help people make more informed spending decisions. Yelps User Operations team already places alerts on business pages when we notice an unusual uptick in reviews that are based on what someone may have seen in the news or on social media, rather than on a first-hand experience with the business. Now, when a business gains public attention for reports of racist conduct, such as using racist language or symbols, Yelp will place a new Business Accused of Racist Behavior Alert on their Yelp page to inform users, along with a link to a news article where they can learn more about the incident.
Affirmative-action is anti-white male racism/sexism.
Let’s accuse any restaurants supporting BLM of racism on Yelp!
Yelp is worthless. Mostly ads for related services rather than the actual review. Say what you want about Google, but Google reviews are better than Yelp.
I dumped Yelp years ago when they allowed bad reviews based on an owners politics if they were conservative but not if they were good little apparatchiks.
Yelp is racist.
Yelp has ALWAYS been extortion, pure and simple.
Totally agree. Yelp is also infested with paid for positive reviews and removes negative ones for larger fees.
#FcckYELP.
I’ll use this new feature to point out obnoxious, loud and profane people at restaurants regardless of ownership. You can probably guess the demographic profile of the noisy ones.
Yea so society isn’t anywhere near this racist.
I’ll to restaurants in Stapleton.
If I see any gang colors or gang signs flashed with their hands, I’ll report it.
It’s not uncommon.
The whole world knows kids wear gang colors in one way or another.
It’s just no one mentions it.
I’m sick to death of leftist a-holes controlling social apps and media.
How many American blacks code for Yelp? And Indian nationals? I’m going to bet they don’t allow accusations of rascism against themselves.
Allowing unsubstantiated (and personal opinion) information to be posted that can hurt the image of a business seems like yelp is going to be sued a lot.
Almost every time I have walked by a table with “people that matter” when they are handling the check, the waiter is saying “so I’ve taken that off the bill.” This usually means that one of the customers ordered Item A and received Item A but claimed they ordeted Item B. Or they purposely ordered some complicated variant of Item A that the chef didn’t get exactly right.
I was at Olive Garden years ago. An African American woman and her companion had finished a meal and then complained. She said that the salad pieces had been far too big. She demanded and received a comped meal. I was so aghast, didn’t even say anything... I should have thrown a fit and brought the place to an uproar in hindsight.
Im already getting bad reviews for having don jr rally outside my restaurant at the end of September and having a blue Lives matter flag on my restaurant. They can stick their politically motivated reviews where the sun doesnt shine.
Yelp is blacklisting businesses.
Good plan.
