Ben Strauss of The Athletic takes a deep dive into the television ratings for this years NBA conference finals. He finds that the ratings themselves took a deep dive:
[T]hese were two of the least-watched conference finals series ever, despite featuring the leagues most famous player (LeBron James) on the leagues most famous franchise (the Lakers). It happened despite Nielsen using Out of Home viewership for the first time ever at the start of September, which likely goosed NBA numbers between seven and 12 percent.
As explained here, the traditional ratings method only counted TVs in households towards the overall numbers. The Out of Home method also counts TVs in hospitals, airports, restaurants and offices. Naturally, this method generates better ratings

Maybe they can all move to Wakanda away from evil White people...
#BoycottNBA
I think our famous high school graduate who plays basketball very well (LeBron) should start learning Chinese and then get on a plane to take the NBA with him.
Too bad, so sad
Who wants to watch games where the overpaid athletes exhibit distain for our country?
Who wants to watch games where the overpaid athletes exhibit distain for our country?
Wait until they find out Wakanda was created by a couple of Jewish guys.
Wow.
I’d wondered if Nielsen was using the “out if home” numbers.
Bet they’re screwing with the ratings from the debate, too, to lower the ratings for that.
“Maybe they can all move to Wakanda away from evil White people...”
I heard they are all going to Hawaii. I am sure the natives will be pleased.
Well, good. Now, the same for the NFL.
Hopefully, SOMEONE up top gets the message.
What is this NBA of which you speak?
I hope the NFL and NBA lose their A$$es on this! I hope these thug/activist “athletes” have to get real jobs! You know they’ll piss all their money away!
They are counting TVs in public places????
I’ve seen TVs in public places where nobody is paying attention to whatever is being broadcast.
How can you get a realistic picture of how many viewers you have, by counting a TV in a place where you can’t accurately count how many, if any, are really watching?
Even in a sports bar environment, not everyone is watching the game.
This reminds me a bit, of decades ago, when I was in the newspaper business. The circulation numbers would be inflated sometimes, as we gave away free copies of the paper, and counted those as part of circulation numbers. They seem to be doing something similar, by counting TVs in public areas as part of the ratings.
But even with these additional TV sets, the ratings are still cratering. Bad news for the NBA.
OF COURSE!
Nothing is sacred anymore. American’s can only tolerate so much political crap. Historically, sports were neutral territory for everyone to relax and enjoy. Dam Chinese own these sneaker sponsored droids.
Once upon a time I was a big NBA/Laker fan. Today, I wouldn’t walk across the street to see one of their games and I never view one on TV anymore. When Sports becomes Political, tune me out.
Obviously true. A bar, waiting room, car dealer, car wash station, airport not playing CNN, a restaurant waiting area can leave the game on and not get the complaints they would receive about CNN or Fox. But the ignore the game, watch it just they are board.
Does anybody know if bars and restaurants are obligated to play sports on their TV’s for cable deals? I was out last night and every tv was playing some game. Not a single person was watching.
Good.....Maybe they should all go back to college and actually get a degree.
