In 2016, I never considered voting for Donald Trump. The Johnny-come-lately Republican and his nasty schoolyard jibes seemed to me the worst degradation of American politics. But in 2020, I may be forced to vote for the man.
Hear me out.
I dont need a bumper sticker or a lawn sign to convey my distaste for Trump his odious tweets, his chronic mendacity and general crudeness. Over the past four years, like an oil slick that besmirches all it touches, Trump himself has managed to obscure his administrations more-substantive accomplishments, such as focusing the worlds attention on Chinas threat to global security and brokering a new era of Middle East peace.
I fear Trumps erratic, personality-driven decision-making. His contempt for NATO is alarming, as is his delusion that he can manage rogue leaders. I dont doubt that his eagerness to withdraw U.S. troops from their stability missions in places such as Afghanistan and Iraq will encourage conflict and terrorism. And I fret that his bizarrely isolationist attitude toward international trade will hurt the U.S. economy and splinter the global trading juggernaut that over the past half-century has brought the world amazing prosperity, lifting hundreds of millions of people out of extreme poverty.
But I fear the leftward lurch of the Democratic Party even more...

pay wall
“And I fret that his bizarrely isolationist attitude toward international trade”
Stop right there.
It’s the United States of America, not the United Nations that President Trump presides over.
Just another rootless Globalist temporarily residing in the “homeland” between gigs in Gstaad or Singapore.
Its hard to read past this point...
They always put “pay walls” up on any article that has a headline that appears positive for republicans. NY Times does too
Fine, but let him cast his vote for Trump first.
Huh, what? Is that like the great peace the Left has brought to the Middle East?
Name one lie, Danielle.
Danielle will vote for Biden.
After all, she’s a statist at heart.
But at least it got into the Washington Post for WP readers to read and think about.
What a smarmy little punk. Amazing how wrong he is about almost everything. Well take his vote because we need it but he gave me a headache
Danielle Pletka is a NEOCON Hawk, who never met a war she didn’t love. She is a free trader who is more concerned with share prices than employment, and could care less if jobs move off shore. She’s a never Trumper. She only wants Trump at this point because she knows the Dems are moving beyond their influence. Socialism is a short stop off on the way to Marxism, where neocons will not only face irrelevance, but persecution. With Trump, the neocon movement is limited. With Biden/Harris, they are eliminated. She is trying to warn her fellow neocons that the Dems are worse than they think, and they can at least survive 4 more years of Trump.
I only see negatives in the excerpt. Bye.
It is not paywalled. I could read the whole article and while, obviously, I disagreed with her opinion of Trump, I think it’s very good that an article pointing out the obvious and serious problems on the left can appear in a generally leftist rag like the Washington Post.
When was the last time this happened? How was this allowed? Its getting to exactly the right audience.
“She is trying to warn her fellow neocons that the Dems are worse than they think, and they can at least survive 4 more years of Trump.”
Granted, but I’ll take it.
I really don’t care if Never Trumpers and liberals who say the vilest things about Trump suck it up and vote for him out of fear of the demonrats and convince a few of their friends to as well.
As long as Trump gets votes to get four more years, I’ll take those votes from wherever they come and worry about the votes for the Republican candidate in 2024 then.
Just like YouTube. Whenever a political ad comes on, I automatically know it’s a democrat when the “Skip Ad” option is no avail and you have to watch all 60 seconds of their crap.
