Beethovens Fifth Symphony starts with an anguished opening theme dun dun dun DUNNNN and ends with a glorious, major-key melody. Since its 1808 premiere, audiences have interpreted that progression from struggle to victory as a metaphor for Beethovens personal resilience in the face of his oncoming deafness.
Or rather, thats long been the popular read among wealthy white men who embraced Beethoven and turned his symphony into a symbol of their superiority and importance. For others women, LGBTQ+ people, people of color Beethovens symphony is predominantly a reminder of classical musics history of exclusion and elitism. One New York City classical music fan wrote in the 1840s, for example, that he wished that all women shall be gagged by officers duly licensed for the purpose before theyre allowed to enter a concert room.
Today, some aspects of classical culture are still about policing whos in and whos out, and it all started with Beethovens Fifth. When you walk into a standard concert hall, theres an established set of conventions and etiquette (dont cough!; dont cheer!; dress appropriately!) thats more about demonstrating belonging than appreciating the music.

They are led by the disgusting, self-hating Israel hater Barenboim.
If you don’t like it you must be a Facist. The opening notes are Morse code for the letter “V” and it was used to signify fighting for victory against Hitler.
I think there is an WWII era Disney Donald Duck cartoon where this is used.
Would it be too obvious to mention that Beethoven was not classical. He was squarely in the middle of the Romantic movement.
With regard to music, pretty much everything ever recorded can be found on YouTube. I find myself going down into musical rabbit holes there all the time. That is, I seek out a rare piece of music and suddenly I am exploring many others.
YouTube is truly a modern marvel. Regardless of what we might think about its owners.
How about Khatia Buniatishvili?
I have a Chinese friend and he is studying to be a conductor in Beijing. I call him “Maestro.”
Daniel Barenboim recently did all of Beethoven’s symphonies at Proms with an Israeli/Palestinian orchestra. Is that inclusive enough for them?
This is some stupid *%#! right here.
I think I remember a story in the UK where a storefront played classical music from speakers outside to make loitering youth disperse.
I am so effing sick of these people.

So we’re now agreed that PBS and cultural subsidies should be discontinued?
The Soviets - at least post-Stalin, were open-minded and tolerant compared with today’s social justice warriors.
That was Ludwig Van’s 9th
Everything is about politics, and everything is about race to these insane freaks - weather, sports, noises - everything and anything.
They will get around to censoring and banning Classical music - and not just on YouTube.
The concept of music “excluding” people is an anti-concept. This is gibberish.
Vox is evil bump.
First of all, it's a lie that "to many" view it as exclusion and elitism. Only the loser agitators at vox.com think that way. Their article shows how pathetic and untalented the staff at vox.com are. If someone doesn't like what Beethoven wrote, instead of trashing it, suck it up buttercup and out-write it. No one is stopping them from writing their own piece but themselves.
It's not coincidence that vox.com is begging readers to donate money: "But our distinctive brand of explanatory journalism takes resources. ...please consider helping everyone make sense of an increasingly chaotic world: Contribute today from as little as $3."
Im surprised because there are several great recordings of Ludwig Von on the VOX label.
