Speaking of Marines...Has anyone here listened to the audiobook ‘Jarhead’ by Anthony Swafford? If your answer is ‘SIR, NO SIR’ then you really should check it out. The movie just butchered Swaffords story but the AB makes you feel like you are actually there...in The Suck. *Warning...its brutal Marine reality...not for children or sissy’s.

I think he is “under arms” which is why he couldn’t take his lid back when it was handed to him, he needs his hands in case he has to fight. At least that is my understanding of the protocol.

He is Under Arms - note the pistol, holster and cartridge belt - but more likely, his orders are to stay at the position of attention.
A lot like the guards at Buckingham Palace, they are required to hold themselves at the position of attention, no matter what.
The Secret Service will handle the "defend the President" stuff.
