I’m not sure just how much too much food we produce, that is food that gets exported, but I’m pretty sure it’s north of 20%.

I get my turkey meat ground at the store. I like them on a toasted brioche bun with lettuce, tomato and red onion. Heaven and healthy, too.

Love it....

The secret to enjoying life is to never take it too seriously, as you will never make it out alive!

Can you put everything (most everything) under one person’s name, and the other person can qualify? (And, for Medicade, too?)

A friend of mine’s parents had to do that. Not sure if it would work, for your situation.

There's an error that I haven't anticipated...a couple of years ago, I bought a 15 year term life insurance policy. I never contemplated living past 79.

If AOC is right, I won't have to worry about it anyway. I think we only have 11 years left now.

My kids know when it's time to put me out to pasture...when I start talking about the summer of 79 incessantly, they'll know it's time to put me away.

That stemmed from when we learned that my mom suffered from Alzheimer's. I called her for her birthday a few years before she passed, and she told me she went to Portland and saw a movie.

The last time she did that was when she was a teenager during WWII. With all the rationing, about the only chance to go to the big city was on a birthday. Only then, she lived about 15 miles from Portland, instead of 180 miles.

My sister and I suspected she was regressing, but we were convinced after comparing our notes. The doctor confirmed it during her next checkup. She'd been living in the mid-1940s for at least a year.

Glad to hear that. I still hear rumblings about bad yields in a lot of places. The rest of the world starves or is on the verge of it as their governments prohibit exports.

And God knows what's going to happen to us if Biden/Harris win.

I foresee Biden dropping out of the picture fairly early on what whatever excuse they are going to give.

Then we are truly screwed.

Our only hope is that the House and Senate remain in Republican hands and that's a thin hope with the turncoats in the Republican party.

We might be screwed either way.

Just keep your eyes on Jesus - nothing else really matters.

Those of us who garden have probably already started collecting seeds for a survival garden. One type of seed that most people don’t think about is true potato seed, or TPS.

I strongly encourage everybody to have a few packets of TPS in your seed stash. Potatoes grow best from tubers, yes. But if something happens to your potato crop, you might find yourself without enough seed potatoes to plant. TPS gives you a way to rebuild your seed stock. It can be stored for long periods of time, just like tomato seeds. In fact, they look like tomato seeds, and are grown in much the same way. They are small enough that an acre’s worth of seeds can fit in a coffee cup.

One thing TPS is not, is consistent. Each plant grown from seed will be its own unique variety. It might be vulnerable to disease, or it might be resistant. It might be bitter, or it might taste great. And the size, shape, color, and texture will be all across the board, with some looking more like alien creatures than potatoes. This is where new potato varieties come from.

The main advantage of TPS is as a backup plan. If you choose tubers from the plants you like best, and use them as seed potatoes the next year, you’ll have a way to rebuild your potato supply after your original crops were wiped out. Potatoes are an excellent survival crop, so having a backup source could be important. Even if nothing happens to your seed potatoes, knowing that you have a fallback plan can ease your mind a little.

Jungs occasionally has true potato seeds, but the best source I’ve found so far is a company called Cultivariable. It’s a small company, run by a guy who is even more obsessive about plants than I am, if you can believe that! His website is https://www.cultivariable.com/ He also has lots of guides and growing tips for using TPS.

“I am thinking about buying a mountain of Twinkies. They should last a long time.”

About 25 years ago I was helping my brother move from one apartment to another. For some reason, he wanted to pull out the frig and clean behind and under it. Lo and behold, I hear him say, “So THAT’S where that went!” It was a box of Twinkies that he had on top, that fell behind the frig - at least 3 years earlier. He was just going to toss it, but I made him open the box and give me one. He guess that he thought I was going to eat it, because he looked at me like I was from Mars - anyway, I opened up one and felt it’s consistency and smelled it. Yup, you guessed it, it felt and smelled no different that it probably did on the day it was made. No, I didn’t eat it.

I have bags of pool shock - can be diluted to make bleach and takes up less room in the storeroom.

I have quite a bit of lard and will have more in about six weeks when the piggies get processed but I also have several large containers of coconut oil. Lasts a long time and fits the category of liquid and solid fat.

but for an anti-food waste program that gives you 70 lb. of fruits and vegetables for $12.

Out of curiosity, what's the name of that program?
