Constitutional Republic vs. Pure Democracy: How the U.S. Election Process Has Changed

Conservatives are generally quick to point out that America is a republic, not a democracy. But what really is the difference, and are they even right?

Voting in America has changed considerably since the days of our founding. Back then, the government didn’t even print official ballots. Instead, you got ballots from the candidate who wanted your support. Sometimes voting took place in public, so everyone knew who you voted for. And, of course, the franchise was largely restricted to white, male property owners.

Now, anyone who turns 18 can vote. And the Democratic Party wants to increase ballot access by automatically registering anyone who gets a driver's license. Democrats even pushed for mail-in ballots for the 2020 election to make voting even easier – and more open to voter fraud. But is any of this a good thing?

Indeed, it is worth considering the transformation of the United States from a Constitutional Republic, ruled by law with the input of the people, to a total democracy, where the will of the people dominates all other discussion.

It’s a cliche but bears repeating, that a democracy is where 2 wolves and a sheep vote on what’s for dinner. And the minority sheep has no unalienable rights in such a vote.

We have evolved to where judges have disproportionate powers, in my opinion. When you look at Supreme Court cases such as those which impose liberal abortion policies, impose homosexual marriage, change the meaning of the word “sex” in sex discrimination laws to include transsexual people, we can see a certain breakdown in the functioning of the constitutional republic we are supposed to be.

Maybe we should raise the voting age back to 21 and also require either home ownership or veteran, and perhaps passing an exam on civics and history, along with taking a oath to preserve the constitution.

DC has transformed itself into a democracy, in complete violation of USConstitution. Therein, DC is required and is to require that States have Republican forms of government.

In democracy, government can do anything with a simple majority vote. In USA constitutional republic, government, esp. DC is limited in what it can do. A simple majority cannot vote to do what government is not allowed to do. The remedy provided for this is to amend USConstitution, only. Any other method IS and SHOULD never have been allowed. Duh.

Wish you had posted the whole thing, because our draconian internal firewall at work won’t let me open the link.

There’s a lot to be said for that. Still, I think people of draft age should be able to vote for the politicians who could conceivably start a war.
