Today is Thomas Sowells 90th birthday, and I want to wish him a happy one.
Sowell may also be happy today that hes been retired for several years, because chronicling our current mess is not fun, although I would dearly love to read or hear what he has to say about it. For many decades, Sowell was one of the most brilliant, clearest, no-nonsense voices in America, although it was mostly the right who listened to him.
Thomas Sowell was also the writer who influenced me most during my political change. Until I read his books about seventeen years ago (I think the first one I encountered may have been The Vision of the Anointed, but another extremely important one for me was The Quest for Cosmic Justice), I just had a vague and growing dissatisfaction with the left, the Democrats, and especially the press. I had no framework in which to place those perceptions, no overview that made sense of them. Sowell provided that. I had no sooner read just a few pages of his thoughts when I breathed a sigh of relief. At last! Someone who made sense. And to think, hed already been writing for many years at that point and Id never before heard of him.
Ive read many of his books since, including his autobiography. Sowell is what used to be called a rugged individualist. He went his own way, and didnt suffer fools gladly. His work should be known by so many more people than it is. I hope hes doing well, and I want to thank him from the bottom of my heart.

Happy birthday to one of the finest conservative minds of our age. I gave my dad one of his books as a Christmas present, and read it myself once Dad had finished reading it.
I appreciate Sowell’s ability to explain and discuss complex subjects in terms that almost anyone can understand.
Dr. Sowell - you have been such a great blessing for this country. Happy birthday!

I echo this. A truly brilliant patriot for whom I have the highest respect and admiration.
90 years - I couldnt imagine he was that old.
I hope hes with us another 90!
I had no idea that he was that experienced - good for him. Happy Birthday, Dr. Sowell, and may you be healthy and bright-eyed for many more!
Heard him on the radio last night he’s still sharp as a tack and a National Treasure.
Dr Sowell, you are an outstanding, incomparable scholar and teacher of a most difficult and complex topic, economics. But unlike pie-in-the-sky sociologists, you use your topic and your giftedness to explain society, history and culture from a firm factual point of view. I truly wish you had been our first black president, but can easily see why the job did not interest you. Most of DC becomes hysterical when confronted with facts, and the love of your fellow man and our nation that you have demonstrated. Thank you, sir, for your lifes work.
Happy 93rd!
Happy 94th!
We are so lucky to have him. Happy Birthday Thomas Sowell!
